  • Think about it. As much as we love them, they were at their creative peak when they broke up. Johnny Marr recognized that the times and musical trends were changing. He decided to cut his losses before The Smiths would start to receive diminishing returns. This move also ensured that The Smiths went out at the top of their game, their legend firmly in place. I'm sure that his and Morrissey's respective careers benefitted from this decision. People are always nostalgic for the past and want what they can't have.
    As for U2, have they made a good album since Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby? They've had a couple of good songs here and there but artistically they hit their peak 20 years ago. Of course, they are a huge commercial success and they always sell out concerts and so forth but, would we really want The Smiths to be that?
