Just days prior to Morrissey’s Irish leg of his 2009 tour, the University of Limerick (UL) is hosting a two day symposium on April 24th and April 25th to celebrate his 20 year career as a solo-recording artiste. This event will feature 20 Irish and international speakers presenting papers on Morrissey which will examine, amongst other themes, his iconic status amongst immigrant Latino fans in Los Angeles, Morrissey and Italian popular culture as well as his use of ambiguity in the construction of his identity.

Last April over 250 people attended a half-day symposium on Morrissey and The Smiths at UL, with the event attracting fans from all over Ireland and beyond as well as widespread media interest.

One of the event’s organisers and Head of the Department of Sociology at UL, Dr. Eoin Devereux said “UL’s Morrissey Symposium will present the European premiere of Kerri Koch’s (2008) fascinating documentary on Morrissey’s Latino fans called ’Passions Just Like Mine’. There will also be a panel discussion on the significance of Morrissey as a cultural icon which will include Len Brown, author of the recent best-selling book ‘Meetings with Morrissey’."

It won’t be all study however. UL’s two-day celebration of Morrissey will include an evening gig (on Friday 24th)in Dolan’s Warehouse, Limerick, by leading tribute band These Charming Men. The band has re-created the music of Morrissey and The Smiths all over the world and have recently played at the Smiths Convention in Los Angeles.
