The 10 Best Smiths Songs - Paste Magazine
By Nick Marino on February 17, 2009

Morrissey’s new album, Years Of Refusal, comes out today. And as much as we love the Mozzer’s best solo moments, nothing compares to the work he did with the Smiths, the immortal mope-rock band whose songs epitomized lyrical literacy and musical jangle. They were such an astounding band that they turned even Noel Gallagher into a fanboy.

Here, in my strongly biased opinion, are their 10 best tunes...

  • Not very credible on Morrissey/Smiths then, eh?

    -Death of a Disco Dancer
    -Still Ill
    -I Know it's Over
-Some Girls are Bigger than others
    -Paint a Vulgar Picture
-There is a Light That Never Goes Out
    -Miserable Lie
    -This Charming Man
    -Well I Wonder
    -Girl Afraid

    In a continuously fluctuating order.

  • Seriously, this list makes the author seem like he got into the smiths ten minutes ago. I agree that TCM and TILTNGO belong on the list, but what about
    Rubber Ring
    Handsome Devil
    Asleep
    William
    The Queen is Dead
    A Rush and Push
    Girl Afraid?

Aw, who am I kidding? There's way too many to every choose the ten best

  • A Smiths Top 10 by someone who obviously only owns a Best Of (apart from Rusholme, his equivalent of a rarity).

    Amateur!

    Half A Person
    Last Night I Dreamt
    Well I Wonder

  • Here's mine:

    1/ I Want The One I Can't Have
2/ The Hand That Rocks The Cradle
    3/ Jeane
4/ The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
    5/ Paint A Vulgar Picture
    6/ Accept Yourself
    7/ The Queen Is Dead
    8/ Half A Person
    9/ Girl Afraid
10/ That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore

And, for the record, and in case anyone is interested, my top 10 Morrissey solo songs:

    1/ Dial-A-Cliche
2/ The Teachers Are Afraid Of The Pupils
3/ The Last Of The Famous International Playboys
    4/ My Love Life
    5/ Girl Least Likely To
6/ Now My Heart Is Full
    7/ Maladjusted
    8/ Alsation Cousin
    9/ Late Night, Maudlin Street
    10/Life Is A Pigsty

I've just noticed, there are four 'side one, track ones' in that list. Interesting. Fascinating, even.
