Morrissey Exclusive #2: The Memoir
by Staff; Photo by Michael Muller | 01.28.2009

In a recent interview with FILTER, Morrissey talked about his music, his life, the new record (Years of Refusal, February 17), and as you will find below, his much-anticipated memoir. Here’s the nugget:

And what about the memoir you're reportedly writing? How does that figure into life's unwieldiness?

Morrissey: If you're 99-and-a-half years old, you can't be sure of what happens next. Certainly, there just seems to be a natural point when it's time to speak. Here is mine.

Let's face it, a Morrissey memoir is about the only creative output from the man worth getting excited about these days. Certainly, as his music is now sub par and he's nearing 50 yrs, the natural course in life would to mature artistically and explore other avenues, such as the written word.

Leave pop music to the younger generations and ease into your 50's gracefully, old man!

  • I would like to see him become a writer. I mostly agree with the above comment, but I would also love it if he quietly released personal sounding acoustic / experimental albums on a small label (maybe even his own) with no desire for chart positions, until the day that he croaks...it's no joke.

  • i'll actually believe it when i physically see a copy of this! it would be unusual to see such a revealing memoir from such a private, enigmatic figure as morrissey. i also found another review of YOR at http://harmonicfeedback.blogspot.com/ [blogspot.com]
which is a bit long, bit waffley but is ok!

  • Writing a memoir is one sure sign you have your head up your own arse. But whattheheck I'd still read it...
As for Morrissey's current music, I think it's still amazing now that he’s singing about how he’s old and famous and has his head up his own arse. The man is in fine form!

I can fully appreciate someone growing in a different direction than Moz. I'm fortunate to have run a parallel line in that regard so I'm quite content. I just need to look at the majority of the bands half his age and younger and realize how important he still is. It's amazing how bad music has become although with the hordes that watch tv shows like Idol I shouldn't be surprised.

  • After reading Morrissey's past prose output, his writing ability leaves a lot to be desired. It's underdeveloped, and naive. I wouldn't be surprised if it is ghost written.

More importantly, outside of pop music, plagiarism is not an accepted part of the creative process.

More importantly, while it will be interesting to see how Morrissey spins his legendary flakiness, and the numerous fallouts that resulted from it, I don't see it being too revealing.

However, anyone who expects Morrissey's word to be a definitive account of events is obviously naive.

  • He and Bruce Campbell are aging in the same way. They share many similar features. They also both have "cults". I may just qualify for membership in both. Anyone else find themselves drawn to both of these fellas?
