You can still listen to the interview online. The interview starts on 57 minutes, after 'Metal Guru'. Runs till 1.28.00. No spectacular revelations, just someone at ease with their career & clearly in love with music and the guitar.

Or you could try to make sense of these quick notes:

    METAL GURU
Metal Guru "It just completely changed my life."
got on his bike "rode & rode until it got dark".
"it assaults you in a certain way"
every christmas a new guitar. fascination with guitar. Irish showbands at family parties.
    the smell of the case.
    Favourite guitars?
"I go through phases." Last couple of years, Jaguars. Wife: "do you have to buy every jaguar?". yes, i do, because this is a lighter blue.
stop me is a good example of rickenbacker sound. black rickenbacker layered a few times.
    STOP ME
got into rickenbackers because i had to adapt my playing; you can't be bluesy. "it would help me play more melodically" (as opposed to rocky).
session with nick lowe while at school.
i was trying to get a band together every day of my life. that was my mission: try and form the band. the new rolling stones. succession of people coming down... front man for a day. proper frontmen were thin on the ground.
moved into new neighbourhood in manchester. hanging around with Billy Duffy. heard about this guy Morrissey who was a proper front man. into writing words. stuck in my mind. that was in 1977.
very fleetingly introduced at a Patti Smith gig. a few years later sought him out. the rest is history so to speak.
    GIRLFRIEND IN A COMA
So you were always the boss? "Well, I met someone else who had a vision in a similar way in Morrissey" "very very different people" managed to make it work.
i wasn't expecting royalty checks to be rolling in. just wanted to be a cool group. unusual quirky odd rock songs.
    (goes onto Electronic)
that was really good fun that group. 9 years. every day. tight. after the smiths I'd been in a very intense gang. when that came to an end, looked for who would be best to be in band with. Matt Johnson The The.
    why did The Smiths stop?
after 5 years a lot of stuff wore us down. intensity & the personal relationships wore us down. it was intense worked hard, no management. a band that successful , hit singles, i felt you needed a manager. i was able to run the day to day aspects of the group... hustling train fares, blag rehearsal, gigs, guitar straps, but i didn't have the desire to ... the logistics of running the band. after 5 years, it was time to end really.
(milk bottles sound on the the record)
    UNCERTAIN SMILE
feel super fortunate, after smiths didn't want to in a band band. the the, electronic,
    GETTING AWAY WITH IT
ever had a proper job? managed to avoid it. clothes shop. compilation tapes.
how do you know you're good player?
it was people telling me. real big moment after the smiths first gig at ritz oct 1982. when i came off stage, joe moss said to me i've never seen anyone play the guitar like that. effusive. the penny dropped.
i've been in portland oregon since august 2005 working with modest mouse. big fan of elliott smith, shins early, built to spill. come back as often as i can, permanently in state of jetlag.
