Boz Boorer - "Pogo mit 46 ist idiotisch!" - laut.de

it's only in german but very interesting. boz speaks about his new solo album, his lifelong love for rockabilly and some facts about "years of refusal".

  • I´m not too impressed with the interviewer, but Boz as always comes across as a cool & nice guy that you can actually talk to & also have fun with. Just stay out of his way at Punkrock concerts, or you might get knocked down! ;-D

Interesting: He has never heard anything about the idea of Morrissey giving a concert in Tehran.

For anyone who´s interested in reading the whole interview, I´ve translated it & will post it underneath.

Here´s the translation of the interview...it might not be perfect, but I did my best. Hope you enjoy it. :-)

"Pogo at the age of 46 is idiotic!"

The Englishman Martin "Boz" Boorer has been at Morrissey´s side as his guitarist for 17 years. Already since the end of the 70s he is an essential part of the British Rockabilly scene. Next week "Miss Pearl", his first real solo album, will be released. We talked to him about passion, going to concerts as a middle-aged person & the new Morrissey album "Years Of Refusal".

It´s his only interview today, but Boz Boorer´s thoughts are somewhere else nevertheless. Since 7 a.m. the Gretsch-guitar that has been made especially for him & has been flown in from the USA, a "Pink Penguin", is waiting for him at the airport in London. It´s the first one ever in pink, he emphasizes. But he still gives us 20 minutes of his time.

So you´re going to pick up your guitar immediately after this talk. What else do you have planned?

Boz: I will go to see the Stray Cats tonight.

They´ve just been here in Germany & were well received by the critics.

Boz: I´ve seen them a few times already & I have to say they´ve always been fantastic. Young Brian is a very good guitarist. I´m curiously looking forward to it.

September 26 your solo debut "Miss Pearl" that´s full of Rockabilly tunes will be released. What are your expectations? Do you have any at all?

Boz: Expectations? One day I was sitting in the studio & I realized that for 12 years I hadn´t released an album. So it was about time for it. & before I knew I had gathered all those songs & a couple of people wanted to release them by all means. Well, the critics seem to like it, shortly I will even do a few things for the radio. I wouldn´t mind if it continued this way.

You´ve just mentioned your last album. That wasn´t a real solo album, was it?

Boz: Yes, it was, but we only had 1000 10" vinyls. Then someone made another 500 cds of it, I think. I´ve never seen a clean account of it.

So we may call "Miss Pearl" your debut.

Boz: Actually yes. At least on a decent label.

Listening to the album I noticed amongst other things your versatilely employed voice. Coarse & rough on the title track & nicely cool Elvis-like in "Dollar Short", which is my favourite track by the way.

Boz: Thank you. I´ve been listening to Rockabilly for, umm, approximatley 30 years. There are uncountable version in that genre & the most different singers. So my thought was: just copy all of them & that way find your own style. (laughs)

Did those things just come flowing out of your fingers?

Boz: No, they developed in different places, in New York, in my studio, some in Southend. "Rockaway Beach" for example developed in Los Angeles, always with befriended musicians.

    Popular musicians?

Boz: Adam Ant sings along on "Jungle Rock", Morrissey´s bassist plays the doublebass on "Rockaway Beach". & Big Sandy is also doing background singing there. But mostly it´s me. Friends & me.

The Sound in its earthiness is reminiscent of the beginnings of the genre. How big is the difference in the production work to working with a specialist like Tony Visconti?

Boz: Ha ha, it´s of course a lot more forthright. Rockabilly was always simple music. If I needed three months to record a Rockabilly album I would probably hate it already once the recordings are finished. (laughs)

    Is Rockabilly a phase-out model?

Boz: There are a few good bands out there. It´s like that: the more there are bands establishing themselves, the more people will take notice of Rockabilly. I think the genre has been like a wave´s movement from the beginnings, it comes & goes.

Pain in the ribs from Pogo

Which bands are you currently listening to?

Boz: There´s this one family, umm, Lewis... (in the background his wife pipes up: "Kitty, Daisy & Lewis") That´s right, thanks. Yes,

  • Some interesting points.

The label want Moz to go away so he appears "fresh." I tend to agree that Morrissey was coming close to over-saturation point. Again. However Moz is hardly going to win over a whole bunch of new fans now. Although he did in 2004. Marketing, gimmickry, talent?

The use of Billy Budd in the setlist and Morrissey proclaiming that he didn't think of that one to play again. (ie The Loop, which was a highlight of the 2008 concerts for me)

Boz is Moz's musical co-ordinator but the extent to which he is surprises me

    Vinyl junkie indeed.

Boz you're a top bloke, good luck with everything and if I'd have known about last night before today I'd have gone

  • Boz´s cd was recommended in my free local paper this week. I was very surprised to see that, as I never expect to see anything but mainstream amongst their recommendations. They wrote he rocks & I must agree! :-)

This is probably not news but for anyone who doesn´t know, you can listen to two of his new songs on his myspace site:
    www.myspace.com/bozboorer1

The songs are "Miss Pearl" & "Dropping Bombs At Your Heart". They´re pretty cool.

He also has another myspace site (just leave out the "1" at the end of the other address). There he has an enjoyable slide show of pictures of him & people he´s worked with or is still working with, his family & two of the pictures also show Morrissey.

  • It's a great album, really good fun to listen to. Obviously not Moz like in any way, shape or form, but I can whole heartedly recommend it.

And the launch night was fantastic too. I can personally confirm that Boz is indeed a really nice guy.
