There is an advertisement in The Guardian today for an upcoming series of booklets to be given away (starting this Saturday in The Guardian and The Observer). The booklets feature the work (and comments on) of great lyricists of our time. There will be 8 in total, and according to the advertisement, three of the subjects will be Bob Dylan, Morrissey and Chuck D.

  • I think we're all missing the point somewhat: Morrissey stands at the forefront of the greatest lyricists, and Chuck D definitely had a lyrical presence regardless of his race, whereas Alex Turner was allowed to quietly slip under the radar?

I'll speak from my heart of hearts, here: No matter the quality of the booklet on obvious choice Morrissey, this series has undoubtedly lost all basis in reality, and is not really worth the hassle.

There is a light that truly never goes out!
  • Nice enough little item to seduce us into buying The Grrrdian, but I wonder where the researcher got the versions from. Because it's not from the (Moz-approved?) lyrics sheets within the original albums.

    So we get, for example:

"Her very Lowness with a head in a sling"
(instead of "her head in a sling"),

"Because I want to see people
And I want to see life"
    (instead of "lights")

    and more inaccuracies.

    Easily done, but disappointing nonetheless.
