This story may yet have further developments but the facts so far are these. iTunes (confirmed in at least two countries, US and UK), amazon.com and Rhapsody (original forum post) are selling paid, apparently legal, downloads of a Smiths compilation "Rare".

iTunes can be found by searching in the iTunes store.

These three stores are very respected and would not willingly deal in illegal or bootleg releases.

Initial fan speculation was that it is a fake. Stephane from passionsjustlikemine said "I know what you mean, but it's still a bootleg. Even the artwork is bootleg quality." in the forum thread here. However, as the release of The Very Best Of The Smiths demonstrates, Warners have every legal right to compile previously released Smiths material as they see fit. Could this be a budget digital-only release? Or how was a bootlegger able to fool not one but three of the most reliable digital retailers in the business?

  • ...and when I tried to buy some it said that the availability 'changed' while I was trying to get the songs. Trying again, it said that the songs were not available in the UK. Is this a US only thing?

And so I drank one, it became four, and when I fell on the floor, I drank more
  • I listened to samples of every song and all of these "rare" versions show up on either the Peel Sessions disc or other various bootlegs. The quality doesn't seem improved. For example, the song What's The World is the exact same version from the EP disc that came out with Work is a Four Letter Word. Some Girls are Bigger than Others came out on the Sandie Shaw 2 Disc EP set.

The only thing I didn't seem to have was the studio version of Draize Train. That was interesting and I've never heard that. The live version of course is on Rank.

i doubt whoever started this up - if it was a bootlegger - had to fool all three. they probably fooled one, and in turn, it was the one the other retailers use.

  • Notice that on Amazon.com it's listed as being available on CD too, but when you click into it it takes you to a completely different CD.

  • And nearly twice as many solo ones are at www.myspace.com/morrisseysavedourlives.

Excellent quality (still mp3, sorry lossless geeks) and I've yet to find ANYWHERE else where this much music is presented this cohesively.

Some are easily found on the net, others not so much. Hope this helps.

So drop by...but only if you want to.

  • Why wouls Warner just put one unknown album up? They wouldn't. Their is something wrong about this. I think it just got put up somehow, believe it or not it is not vbery hard to get stuff up on itunes. You can just go throgh one of these on-line publishing companies.

    Don't support him.

  • This re-working of a compilation has made its way to iTunes Australia.

Sadly, when I attempted to buy them I was given an error message stating they are no longer available.

Maybe crooked music executives were attempting to sell them outside of the UK and were found out. What is strange is that they are still able to be found on iTunes, just not purchased.

  • Which film is the photograph on the cover from? Thanks.

  • Why would this somewhat random CD be up but not the rest of their catalouge. Usually, the more obvious stuff, meaning stuff that has already publishjed get's put on itunes and amazon first for digital purchase.

I find it hard to believe Warner would put this up as the introduction to itunes. Aslo, their is usually a press release when a major band like The Smiths releases their stuff on-line on itunes.

This reeks of a bootleg. And, it not ahrd to get stuff on itunes. I am a musician and played on album, we got it on itunes in three days. You just pay an online publishing company a small fee, itunes pays them and they pay you.

Someone just created this and published it. Look how shitty the cover-art is. It looks like a someone using photoshop to make a faux Smiths cover.

Also, I would just like to say Morrissey/Marr and their management has mishanlded their back catalauge. Why is it not on itunes? Why are most of their albums not in major chains?

Marr admited in a recent interview that their stuff was being handled poorly. This is yet another exemplification of that reality.

  • Does anyone remember, or know the band that does a song where the singer sounds quite a bit like Morrissey and the song chorus says "Boys Boys Boys"...sorta dark and gothy like? I can't remember, and I want to hear those songs again...

I thought they were called the Boys, but that's hard to look up...sooo many....Do they have an album?

    Thanks... MP

  • Dude, those tracks are kinda lame. The Smiths don't rock, man. I just don't dig them. Just listen to "Wonderful Woman". It sucks.

The Smiths don't kick ass. Morrissey solo are so much more, like, cool!

  • All the tracks from "Rare" seem to have been taken off the UK itunes. They must have found them to be bootlegs, they'll probably come off the other sites soon.
