Here is a write-up and video for the song "All you Need is Me":

Video: Morrissey: "All You Need Is Me" - Pitchfork

Steven Patrick Morrissey's latest UK single claims "All You Need Is Me", and that's mostly what we get-- plus his band and some warm-weather scenery--- in the video for this fine song from last year's 00s-focused Greatest Hits. Always happy to pick a fight, the Pope of Mope grins and frolics in the clip while the track pours its venom on Moz-obsessed critics. "There's so much destruction all over the world/ And all you can do is complain about me," he sings, looking as chipper as the words are scathing. Backdropped by a ferns and palm trees, Morrissey slaps a tambourine and strikes dramatic poses as the band throws itself into the hard-charging midtempo backing. Each of the Tormentors gets his own shot in a studio-like setting, too, and overall the video is as straightforward and confident as the tune itself. "I'm still here," Moz points out. Damned if we don't keep coming back to him.

  • ...does he think this will air?

No dig against Moz or the song (Love it!) but the fact is MTV or VH1 will never, ever air this. Morrissey, as incredible as he is, does not fit in with Music Televsion's target demographic.

So, tens of thousands of dollars spent so that a few hundred interneters can view the video online.

He'd have been better off playing a concert on the day they filmed this. At least he'd have taken home a bit of pocket money.

  • The videos for 'Tomorrow' and 'We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful', on which this is modeled a bit, must have cost four times as much, and looked ten times better.

Jesus, that is shocking. And for one of his best songs in years. Why didn't they do the 'Tomorrow' thing and just follow Moz down a route with the band following in one shot? His face could do the rest.

Decca are shit. He needs someone to take control, win trust, be long term, oversee his retirement in 10-15 years time, and manage the back-catalogue releases correctly.

"You'll miss me when I'm gone"... Damn right! But at the moment no-one is securing the legacy. That was a shit-awful video and there hasn't been a good one since... I dunno... 'Dagenham Dave'?

  • Groan. The production value--well, there was none. I can only imagine this was all done with one hand-held Steadycam filmed in the backyard of Morrissey's lawyer's house.

What's he thinking? This is no way to enter the third act. I know it's frowned upon to move backwards, but maybe he should start revisiting some of his older producers like Lillywhite or go with someone who wouldn't take the soul out of the music--what's Ed Bueller doing these days? I always thought he'd produce the fuck out of a Morrissey LP.

This all said, the song is good--not great, but good, just a little too sterile. This video only takes away from the gritty heart of the tune. I don't see anything good coming from Decca or his new management team.

The thing that kills me is that all of his problems are so easily identifiable and manageable, yet no one is taking charge.

  • At first I thought the video could be a little more fancy and varied, but then I began to enjoy it. Morrissey does make a lot of funny hand and face gestures (and he does look very hot) :)

We all got so used to his gloomy image and he is so joyful now and it's as if he's saying "why not the joy?". And the boys jumping like squirrels. Shouldn't they have to jump for joy? It's a short time on this Earth and if we get to serious our bones and joints will stiffen much earlier than we predicted.

I prefer the "Moz About Town" video cycles. At least he's not asked to appear as an action hero.
The song is still a paint by numbers affair, but with the video attached to it, it's a bit more enjoyable.

Oh, and anything that involves a group of men smiling and having fun is going to look gay.

But let's be clear, the man is gay. His collaborators just pretend to be gay while they're in the band.

He looks somewhat like a child's drawing of a shark.

It's sad that Morrissey would waste this opportunity by rewarding a professional sycophant. A lot of very talented directors would have been willing to shoot a Morrissey video for little or no compensation. We might have really had something to look forward to. Instead, another pisstake.

I adore Jesse s'orange tee-shirt (that is very important, of course) and Moz looks good in his blue tee-shirt.
That video will attract no new fans, but what I like is that for once, Mozzie doesn't take himself too seriously. There is something more subtle in his "acting" than what we had recently been used to,and that is a relief.
