Manchester United won the European Champions League after beating Chelsea. The win came on the 50th anniversery (year) of the Munich crash that Morrissey sang about on the classic B-side song 'Munich Air Disaster 1958' off the 'Irish Blood, English Heart' single.

The match was held in Moscow and United beat Chelsea 6-5 in a rain-soaked shoot out following a 1-1 tie.

In addition to being a b-side song, 'Munich Air Disaster 1958' can also be found on "Deluxe Edition" of 'You Are The Quarry'.

  • What was the point of this story?

If a Mexican sports team win a trophy are we going to put something up because Morrissey has a song called Mexico?

On a seperate note, Man Utd were very very lucky last night and Chelsea should have won.

  • We don't care. The connection to Morrissey is pathetic. I see perfectly reasonable posts moved like crazy on the forums, yet this rubbish gets main page billing?

    Don't make me laugh

  • Hopefully the Man Utd Players flight will come down on its way back. Now that would be something to Celebrate.

  • This *is* relevant news- this year is the 50th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster that, as a an ex-resident of Manchester, Morrissey felt passionately enough about to write a song about. The dramatic events of last night could be seen as a story of fate and redemption- one that Morrissey would surely appreciate- and the Cup win was dedicated to the memory of the Babes.
Also, despite what you might read to the contrary from bitter ABUs here, United deservedly won! ;-)

  • The greatest pleasure I get when Man U win is the bitterness and silence from the ones that hate us. I can just answer every negative comment with a smile and the word "Champions!".
It is one thing to lose with dignity and respect but I feel it is even more important to win with dignity and respect and the way the Man U players lined up to applaud the Chelsea players was very sporting and full of respect which is such a better way to do it than milking it and mocking the opposition which I am sure would have been the case if Terry would have scored that penalty.
Man U always win dramatically and it was all like a repeat of the 1999 final with Chelsea hitting the post and hitting the bar but remember, we have Van der Sar!!!!!

Have a great summer people, I know I will :-)
