  • Oh joy, another load of ham-fisted, meat grinder-esque guitar performances from Boz and co. Morrissey will harp on once more about his problems all being somebody elses fault..he'll flaggelate himself with the mic chord, yes, we've seen it all before.

Morrissey has never needed the creative spark of Johnny Marr more.

Of course there is a very slight chance that the tour dates mentioned will be Festival ones and before the new album gets released, just a thought!

  • Oh deep joy. I predict more tantrums, cancelled shows, shows running - oh, 25 minutes - hideous guitar parts and needless drum fill from the brothers Walker, lame support acts and dignity reducing 'band uniforms'. Morrissey has become part of the industry - these shows and his latest Greatest Hits are helping keep the "vile" (direct quote from Moz') industry alive. Well to all those fans soooooooo thrilled by the latest 'bonus' live disc - you'll have another one this time next year when Moz and Merc re-release the as yet unreleased new album as a limited edition version, complete with a vintage artwork of the 17 year old Morrissey on a Manchester Street wearing a T-Shirt that proclaims 'Cynical, Moi?'. Truly disappointed.

  • Personally speaking, after 12+ years of Morrissey solo fandom I've come to the depressing conclusion that the great man has indeed lost it. Is this a temporary thing? I hope so but am prepared for the worst. He seems to have nothing left in his life to challenge him so the music has understandably suffered; the cash / flunkeys executing his every whim and anyone who presents a threat - however minor - is removed. This half arsed Greatest Hits package is better left unmentioned but sufficed to say that I will never purchase it.

Mainly, the quality of the music has been on the slide since 2004 with the last album in particular being half promising (Alain's tracks) and half dreadful (Jesse's er, "efforts"). The only Morrissey track that has cut deep for me since the Quarry singles is Ganglord and that wasn't even on the album let alone the proper single it deserved to be. ROTT (a telling acronym) is clearly the Kill Uncle of our time. Also, Moz seems to have definitely lost his skill of assembling an album's running order.

Anyway, as other people have said he should take two years off and try new collaborators. Boz may be a nice bloke but these days he can't write a proper song to save his life and the grindingly monotonous backing track on the latest single is sad proof. Just how long can he keep diluting the Your Arsenal formula? It gets more tired every time I hear it to the point of encroaching my justified reverence of the 1992 original.

Secondly, I miss the the Morrissey lyrics of old that used to tell stories with a humorously bleak slant detailing characters and their situations. These days it just seems to be a big whingefest about how nobody knows how he feels blah blah... literally Moz, change the fcuking record. We got the message some time ago and your millionaire lifestyle is hardly impoverished. It's like listening to the Queen endlessly moan about having to walk the corgis.

As I say, I hope he comes back from this fallow period although can't help but think of the following scene from the film Trainspotting:

Sick Boy: It's certainly a phenomenon in all walks of life.
    Mark: What do you mean?
Sick Boy: Well, at one time, you've got it, and then you lose it, and it's gone forever. All walks of life: George Best, for example. Had it, lost it. Or David Bowie, or Lou Reed.
Mark: Lou Reed, some of his solo stuff's not bad.
Sick Boy: No, it's not bad, but it's not great either. And in your heart you kind of know that although it sounds all right, it's actually just shite.

Replace Lou Reed with Morrissey from 2004-20??

Ah well, let the sycophantic slags commence their predictable "why do you post / spend hours on here then? blah blah" rhetoric. Is that really the best rebuttal you lot can manage? Idiots.

Any replies with a reasoned alternative point of view are naturally welcome.

  • At last an intelligent debate rather than a slanging match!

I can understand the point of view of those who are lamenting what they see as Morrissey's musical decline. THPGU, whilst a good song, is not really of the quality of most of his work, and he does seem to have settled on the loud, lurching 'gear shifting' style that characterised most of ringleader. At the same time though I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing - Vauxhall aside most of his albums are not remarkable so much for their musical invention and experimentation but for their lyrical brilliance and strong sounding songs.

I think it was Stephen Street who said he realised that people are attracted to Morrissey chiefly because of his lyrics and therefore the music must give him a platform. A track like All You Need Is Me may not be particularly original muscially, but it's just right for the song's content. It's a gutsy stomper!

That's not to say that some of the recent albums haven't had some lovely individual pieces of music on them - Quarry and Ringleader are far more accomplished and polished than say Uncle and Southpaw. And some of the B sides to Quarry were amazing - worthy of being an album in their own
    right.

Lyrically I don't think Moz can be accused of losing his way either. Perhaps he now has a more direct style, but he's still capable of some gems -

'I was a small, fat child in a welfare house/there was only one thing I ever dreamed about...'

You're kidding yourselves if you think there are many artists today who canrite with the wit, intellience and genuine feeling that Moz still does.

Lastly - think of what has IMPROVED over recent years. His voice is now incredible, the strongest it has ever been, and his live performances really hammer home the fact that the boy can REALLY sing now - gone are the yelps (nice though they were) of the smiths days and they have been replaced by a voice that some of the ratpack would have been happy to claim as their own!

I think it's easy to get complacent and forget just how good he is - someone mentioned Ganglord above and I have to agree that it's an amazing song - it's got heart, and a real brooding intesity. Live it sounded great. And that was just a b-side!

There's plenty of life in the old dog yet.

  • bought Beautiful World by Take That last year and I'm afraid to say that as for songwriting, melody and production it eclipses anything that Moz has put out in the last few years since Quarry. The singles Patience and Rule The World are perfect examples of expertly crafted songwriting and musical execution. I find it hard to believe that I was listening to Vauxhall back when Take That were knocking out teeny pop songs that were disposable drivel and nowadays I prefer listening to Take That in my wife's car to Morrissey. Not because I dislike the man, I still can't break away from my love for him, I'll always love him, but his music has become so inconsequential and bland, tuneless, uninspiring and insignificant to all but a few people blinded by loyalty that he really needs to wipe the slate, get rid of the music-by-numbers pub rock band and do something different and new. The thing I loved about Morrissey was that people used to say he was crap but you KNEW that he was brilliant but these days it's hard to defend him and be honest. After seeing his recent TV appearances it's almost embarrasing when other people who know you love Morrissey say he was rubbish and you know it too. You can't be honest and say that the recent output has the same effect that his earlier stuff had. You still hear flickers here and there of great melody in the newer stuff but the music is so insipid and bereft of any spark, well, them guys have to go. No more clunking dirges, no more rockabilly rubbish and embarrasing songs about Jesus. One more bad, unlistenable album will push so many long term fans over the edge and away for ever.

  • Why is no one on here ever satisfied. For years Morrissey didn’t tour, didn’t record and people criticized him for being too picky, too lazy, ignoring his fans down on and on and on. And now he tours non stop, releases a GH to help support all the tours and commits to a new album in a matter of months with spectacular songs and the band is superb, well before anyone would have predicted if they didn’t know. And yet that is bad now. You saddos say his songs are bad, his band is bad, he’s responsible for racism and pornography with his ass. He’s like a dart board where you fans are waiting to throw your relentless insults and criticisms as though you were beating him with a stick. I know this because I cast spells on people and I am into black magic and I make things happen. The only shame is that he doesn’t leap down while you are blindfolded, rip the stick from your hands, hit you three times over the skull, and when you are bowled over in pain, step on your head and push it into a nearby rabbit hole until it was stuck and then with your arse elevated in the air, ram that stick right up it. Can haha
This is not a Morrissey message board, it’s a Morrissey malice board.
It’s snawing. Yes we know you are upset because he will be touring and releasing a new album and all your money has been injected in your veins. And you want to go to his show but you always are too drumk and wasted and get lost on the way and end up passed out in an alley being “sung” to by a wino with a 3 alley cat backup band who scratches your penises and fish stinking ocean infested vaginas each time you come to and bellow they suck and need to be replaced. You cackling diaper wearing petty drunken eels with the integrity and intelligence levels of dead worms and soggy stamps. Can haha You broken bra straps, you are mentally disturbed snails who belong in operating rooms. You fans who have turned on Morrissey are just accidents waiting to happen. You hate Morrissey now, we get it, we’ve heard it five million times. You have been farming it out. Heed my warning, just keep farming it out with you doddie in your diapers. Can haha.
So here’s what you should do. Crawl out from under your ved whre you’d dropped your last vicodin you’d stolen from your immigrant neighbor, take the clothes you’d been saving up in your closet for your next drug smuggling operation and hopefully someone will shoot you or the cops will come and take your faced bandwagon jumping accidents waiting to happen away for good before you flounder into Morrissey’s presence where we think by the looks of things you might shot him. We hat you. and it’s about time that you get back everything you have given him. Wee are sick of it. We are sick of you and we are afraid that you are going to harm Morrissey because you are apparently unbalanced, schizophrenic, multi personalitied psychopaths who could be capable of shooting him. look at this plave, look at all of your drugs and your regurgitating disturbing and quite alarming props. It’s time things get shaken up around these message boards and you people need to be investigated. Deal with it.
Go get a job at the local fishery licking the fishes clean and save your money by only being drunk 12 hours of the day instead of the usual 24. I know this about you because I use tarot cards and saw your sunken face in a witches brew. I have powers and I make things happen. Can haha. I also know your intentions and we are not pleased with the instability amongst you sociopaths who come one here floating about with your boring mundane repetitive bashing to a man who owes you nothing. We have wised up and there is no telling what I am very tempted to do to put a stop to you mental winos who should cease to exist. There is an operating roon awaiting you God damn sociopaths who are just accidents waiting to happen. Go put you diapers back on and find another stars reputation to yurn to ruins. Remember I am the prince of darkness and I know what is to be. You will be licking your wounds for what you have done to a great icon who owes you nothing except canceled shows and no refunds. Isn’t there a burning building awaiting you now.
