Johnny Marr joined the Cribs onstage last night in glasgow (Feb. 1).

he played with them for two songs , the first a cover of Panic and the second i'm a realist (joined also by video by lee rando from sonic youth)

It was part of the NME (so boycotted by Me)

  • I do so hope the Smiths never ever get back together. It would be such a massive disappointment for everyone. It never works. You can't go backwards, it could never be the same as it was. And it ruins the 'legend' And i am sick to the back teeth of people going on about it. As a wize man once said : "Give it a rest won'tcha ?"

  • Nice quotes. Mr. Marr seems like a very good man that dives in with both feet when tackling a project (professor job, bands, etc.). Found the article interesting and enjoyable to read.
    Good on you Johnny!

  • What an excellent article.

It's great to hear that Johnny has so many different areas of fulfillment in his life currently.
Family life. Music. Mentoring other musicians. I think he's hit the jackpot in the personal happiness stakes.

No seriously innovative musician is going to stay rooted to the same spot year-in, year-out. His rationale for the demise of The Smiths seems entirely coherant and honourable. He even got to work with Karl Bartos! No wonder he had itchy feet.

I particularly like the little dig about 'that photo':

"I just hate it." Because it's become so iconic and stylised? "Nah. Because I look so crap in it. It's the one frame I'd put an X against to show that I didn't like it and then someone - who looked exactly the same in every single picture - decided to use it just to piss me off."

Now, now, you two! No more squabbling or I'll put you both in detention.

I think the Mancunian Irish Catholic Work Ethic as described by Marr is extremely important in understanding the emergence of The Smiths. Morrissey was so privileged and unique to emerge within such a culture with a mother who unconditionally supported him through the wilderness years.

Coming from a 'mirror-image' culture in Birmingham: I'm just wondering what my bus-driving Dad's reaction would have been if I'd have said-
"Father - I'm a poet!" The fag would have dropped from his mouth and I'd have been sentenced to even more chores for my 'delusional fantasy' As for 'retiring' to bed as a teenage Proust.....!!!!

And yet, Morrissey has repeatedly claimed / complained of a background of 'poverty' and 'deprivation'. It really doesn't stack up. It's just too bizarre.

Good luck Johnny. I hope your mentoring helps another Mancunian musical maestro emerge.

    Kind regards.
