He's got so much more to say. Made me feel quite sad.
As for the video, well everyone wants a piece of Moz. A fleeting touch, a half-arsed hug.
He claims to hate the security at concerts, that his fans get treated badly by them (I refer in particular to Marley Park, Dublin, '06) , but it looks like he positively revels in these concert lemmings getting the boot and shove by the bouncers.
He's a very desireable man, and bloody well knows it, its not 1983 anymore.

They could've done something interesting with the fact that the fans are still getting on stage like in the will never marry video, but grown up.

  • It's nice that he still makes music (still releases good records too), tours, etc., but he seems like an old man anymore. I haven't been to a Morrissey concert since YATQ - but it seemed so... 'vegas'. This video even more so, the band in uniforms? Morrissey dressed like he's going into the office for his 9x5 job...
I like him and love his music more, but he's really past his prime. Siouxsie Sioux is even a bit older I think, but she's still managed to hold it together and put on a good show. I think when I saw the YATQ show, I actually left a little early to escape the rush out of the concert afterwards - ten years before, I would never have thought to do that.

I hope this song isn't going to be a single.

  • Morrissey has never liked making videos, and never wanted to, but found he had to.... so it's better to have this kind of live footage than a half-arsed attempt at a 'real video' and personally i like it. I think also the song is a real grower, and i wish people would stop moaning. Whatever he does someone will moan...some slagged Vauxhall for being too 'mellow' then slag 'Southpaw' for being too rock...the guy can't win. Don't like it, fine, but shut the fuck up about it, and simply don't buy it. I think it's great.
    Anonymous -- Thursday January 17 2008, @07:15AM (#291789)
  • Cool Video. I love the live footage ones. This one in particular has so much energy and action. Awesome!

The song itself is okay during most parts but the one part where he sings about never being someone's sweetie, musically or lyrically just seems too forced and it doesn't quite fit that well.

I do think the recorded version sounds better than the live versions i have seen, for some reason but not tremendously more.

  • It made my morning just a little brighter - with my bittersweet coffee :)

The interesting thing about the clip is that it goes on the same line as "Will Never Marry", but with a hint more of deliberate French-accordeon/Adams Family dark comedy sprinkles to it. I love the way the "French accordeon follows Morrissey's voice as if it were haunting it, and the way the atmosphere of desillusion conveyed by the song contrasts so bluntly with those images of adoration of countless fans.

  • What the fuck? A montage of some recent concerts? At least when it was done with First of the Gang to Die, there was some style and correlation to the song. This video has nothing to do with anything--it looks like a fan-made video compilation sliced together on Microsoft Windows Video Maker.

In the grand scheme of things, videos don't mean anything, but if you're going to make one, make it right. I'm not sure how much money was spent on this video, but I'm sure anyone that had some knowledge of Morrissy could have taken the budget and produced something far more interesting and viral.

This (and the latest "Greatest Hits" collection) does not bode well for Morrissey's future with Decca.

  • What a dreadful video. I quite like the song but why the lazy attempt for the video. He has given up on the things that used to separate him from the pack things like sleeves (don't get me started on the forthcoming sleeves for this single and the Greatest Hits album) and promo videos. That said another 'Jesus' video with the band walking behind him down a street would be worse but only slightly. Disappointing I think, shame cos I like the song and it's been on Radio 2 in the UK on several prime time shows.

  • - Raw footage itself is excellent. Well shot and capturing priceless Moz moments.
    - Editing is OK. Some of it syncs well but probably by happy accident. Would've benefitted from a few more shots of Moz actually "singing" the song.
    - Video would've also benefitted from a bit of non-concert footage -- even if it was something as simple as all the fans lined up waiting to get in or after-show autographs etc. Or a Russell Brand narrative thread.
    - Don't forget that only die-hards have seen "Will Never Marry," though "First of the Gang" is similar. It captures the adulation and mania. If I wasn't a Morrissey freak I'd be intrigued.
    - The song is a fine opening salvo for more and better to come. Stop whingeing and support Moz and Boz!

  • I've loved Morrissey since I was in my teens and he was with the Smiths. I've idolised him and always been proud of liking him because his music was edgy and somewhat different. This song is so damned awful that I can't listen to it, Morrissey or not, it's just a dirge of a tune. His music is now becoming so bland that his 'comeback' has ruined his legacy by churning out such inconsequential rubbish and I'm now at the point where I'm becoming embarrassed to admit that I like his music. Please don't criticise my post, or me, that would be pointless. Just answer me a question, truly from your heart.
Do you really love this song or are you just saying it's ok because it's him?

  • The video is obviously not even mildly creative. Anyone who thinks it's good for the song is just in love with images of Morrissey concerts. That does not make this a good "short film". I'm a film-maker and I know I could do alot better. That's not bragging either, this is the laziest and least interesting way to go about a video. If you have access to the footage anyone could do this.

It's completely inconsequential to the song, which is not good, and could have been pasted to absolutely any Morrissey song. I gave up on a seeing a great Morrissey video, or a decent Leonard Cohen album long ago, I don't want to give up hope. It's looks like I might have too. Dammit!

When I first watched the video, I liked it because it made me happy to see people making it on stage and its an energetic video, but maybe its not a 'great' video and I wont want to watch it in 10 years and say, 'Wow, I love this video'. But I probably would if I was in it!

  • That Morrissey will never abandon the cheesy pub rock sound that is simply a paint by numbers formula.

His lyrics have become silly, and token, as well, his voice now sounds like that of a dying Muppet.

It's true that in the music business your shelf life is rather short, and Morrissey is proving that point.

The fact that the sheep continue to acknowledge this tripe says a lot about their characters.

  • Lame song, lame video. The disconnect between Missy's blathering about being so unique and not really a part of the run-of-the-mill music business just doesn't hold water any more. This is pompous self-adoration at its worst. He so wants to be Elvis - right down to the giant letters and white suit. The video is repulsive in its display of rock-star ego. And this isn't a non-fan talking either.

  • Morrissey is slowly completing the transformation into everything that he's railed against. His music is not even remotely the most interesting thing out there right now.

The past 12 years of his career has made him look like he really doesn't know what the fuck he is doing. He's the alternative music world's version of Michael Jackson.

He really needs to retire if he hopes to salvage his legacy. I want him off the stage, not because I never want to see him again, but simply for his own good. It's truly sad to watch.

  • perhaps the worst song he's ever written. how can anyone defend this piece of rubbish? imean:

    I was wasting my time
    Trying to fall in love
    Disappointment came to me and
Booted me and bruised and hurt me

    I was wasting my time
    Looking for love
    Someone must look at me
    And see their sunlit dream

    I was wasting my time
    Praying for love
For love that never comes from
    Someone who does not exist

Let me live before I die
    Not me, not I

    I was wasting my life
    Always thinking about myself
    Someone on their deathbed said:
    "There are other sorrows too"

    I was driving my car
I crashed and broke my spine
So yes there are things worse in life
    Than never being someone's sweetie

    That's how people grow up
    That's how people grow up
    That's how people grow up
    That's how people grow up

    As for me, I'm ok
    For now anyway

give me a break. thats as bad as any lyric ever written by anyone. the tune is worthless (the intro is horrid)- finn's hollow production back in action. even his singing is poor. there is not one redeeming feature to this song. it's flat out terrible.
