HADLEY BACKS MORRISSEYS ALLEGED RACIST COMMENTS - Contact Music

SPANDAU BALLET star TONY HADLEY has spoken out in support of MORRISSEY - insisting the star's alleged views on national identity were accurate. The former Smiths frontman was alleged to have made the controversial remarks in a recent interview with British music magazine NME, although he has since refuted the allegations of racism. He is reported to have said: "Other countries have held on to their basic identity, yet it seems to me that England has thrown it away." But Hadley insists he agrees with the singer's reported words, and is adamant tighter measures need to be used to limit immigration to the U.K. from foreign countries. He says, "Morrissey was right in what he (reportedly) said about England losing its identity because of immigration. I would back that. "Everyone jumps on the race bandwagon when you mention immigration. But this is a very small island. Immigration has brought some benefits but we need to keep it under control. This is not about race, we just need to know how many people are in this country." Morrissey took legal action against the NME earlier this week (begs03Dec07) over the alleged comments.

  • Tony Hadley is attempting to stand as a Tory candidate, so, being a music industry style chap, he feels he can comment on such safe Tory ground. Arse.

  • Never mind his views, Tony Hadley is a great singer, and "True" was one of the finest singles of the 80's. Tony is still going, whereas the alleged talent in Spandau, Gary Kemp, failed miserably in his attempts to launch a solo career.

  • Racism and Immigration are not synonymous- as Beth Hilton (journalist?) once again erroneously postulates. That's why two different words are required.

Do we have to censure all public political debate (as the NME appear to want to do) so that the 'lower orders' (and, yes, I'm being deliberately ironic) don't get 'confused' about the difference?

In the slipstream of any media whirlwind, anyone and everyone will try to jump aboard, including Tony Hadley, who has a pleasantly seductive voice if you've had enough Bacardi & Coke!

    But he's hardly Barry White.

If he's standing as a Tory MP, I won't be able to 'get it up' to 'True' anymore. Shame! As it's a good shag song from the 80's.....

    Kind regards

  • Nice of Tony Hadley to throw Moz a bone of support. Handing him a lifeline, Knowing full well communication let him down, So true!

To cut a long story short Moz is still Gold in my mind! Moz for sure does not need this pressure on.

  • I think the most depressing thing is that Morrissey GENUINELY wasn't trying to be xenophobic but a few characters jumped on his words and say they "support" what he said!

When I saw uber right-winger Mr Kavanagh "on Morrissey's side" in The Sun I was almost sick.

Take a look at this article about Moz v the NME

  • People think that the US should or does not have a national identity. Well, to all of these moronic, immature, boring, pseudo-intellectual idealists: what was the constitution/declaration of independence? What does our flag mean? Who unified in WWI/WWII to help defend the freedoms of other countries in need? Why do we pay taxes? What is baseball/football, fast-food, chronic obesity, rock & roll, the blues, etc? Good or bad, we certainly do have an identity - a national language, borders and a unified culture that should be recognized & preserved. This isn't to exclude other nationalities or cultures from celebrating and sharing their heritage or national identities here - as long as they recognize what they came here for and why/what and how our country was founded (along with the way that just about every-other country was founded).

  • Respect where due, he's an excellent vocalist and Spandau Ballet were most definitely one of the most prolific bands of the 80's Britain.
I'd defy anyone to say there isn't at least one spandau ballet track within their top twenty.
Spell his name right mate, before you care to dismiss comments.

    Hadley is an excellent vocalist.
