Julian Cope writes on his website his reaction to the NME/Morrissey debacle. Choice quote:
"But while it’s surely the duty of all Western artists of Morrissey’s stature to court controversy from time to time, even if it’s merely to jerk people out of their Spice Girls Reunion/Peter’n’Jordan stasis, the ex-Smiths singer would do well to remember that, however much he claims to love England, the evidence is clear that he loves this country only enough to have emigrated. And like many ex-pats, he wants us poor saps to become guardians of his imaginary ‘60s Carry On England while he’s off abroad being a foreigner."

  • Julian cope is a boring old twat who hasn't done anything relevant for well over a decade...

Plus he fucked Courtney Love, which shatters what little credibility he had left.

  • Cope? "People always liked the idea of him more than they ever liked any of his actual songs," is the line, I think.

  • The reason Morrissey is no longer a 'British resident' is, surely, to avoid having his assets seized in relation to the High-Court case involving Mike Joyce, which went against him? I imagine that was part of his reason for looking to Los Angeles and feeling that 'London Is Dead'? I very much doubt it is for tax purposes as Great Britain has extremely lenient taxation structures for the super-rich, that's why 'you hear so many Russian-speaking people on the King's Road these days'. As for 'being a foreginer': Morrissey, as a second-generation Anglo-Irishman, like myself, is legally entitled to dual citizenship/nationality, having both Irish Blood and and English Heart, or in my case: Celtic Blood-Mercian Heart. I understand he still has a property in Dublin and has certainly not revoked/renounced British citizenship. To call him a 'foreigner' seems.....dubious. What's wrong with 'being a foreigner' anyhow, Julian? As much as I've enjoyed Julian Cope's music (at times!) and his remarkable Antiquarian Books on Ancient Albion Culture, I find his remark regarding 'Carry On England' to be a fatuous reduction of Morrissey's astonishingly complex view on Britishness. As to what he means by 'poor saps'. Who knows? If he's poor, then I regret he did not have an efficient lawyer and accountant in his peak earning years. I'm disappointed in him. Kind regards.

  • I gotta admit that when someone runs smack on Moz I don't like it. Being a Moz clone has that effect on people. There's a million different ways to attack Julian Cope but I happen to think he has a valid point. Moz seems to want to be anywhere but England. Why-Who-What-Where i'll let the rest of you discuss, but i'm always more interested when the Man fires back.

He rarely does and he probably won't. The response we got from him concerning the NME last week was a classic blast only Moz can out-do.

    ...and how?
  • With reference to Mr 'no hope' Copes' comments about Morrissey residing outside of England. I honestly believe that Moz left these shores due to the paparazi battering he took after the Finsbury Park gig and the hounding that was soon to follow, He had no choice than to leave. I've gone over the NME interview several times and I've tried to find out what it was that Moz said which caused such an outrage and I can't find anything, I just believe it was just plain open hearted truth. Yes we know he longs for the day when the whole of Britain will be in black and white, the Prime Minister will be Oscar Wilde, the National Anthem Will Be Trash by The NY Dolls the monarchy will be replaced with the Carry On cast (Once a year they will gather on the Balcony and Kenneth Williams will look down on everyone, nostrils flaring and say "OOOOOOOOOOOhh Matron!!!" But this country is pretty messed up, we are such a polite nation that when we try and speak our minds we are often looked upon as being rude and inconsiderate. There are many areas of immigration that you could argue both for and against, but when someone badgers you with questions on the negative side of it you always come out of it sounding contraversial. Hang on a bit I think I've lost the plot here.......Didn't I start by having a go at Julian Cope?!?!? .......Bugger.....sorry this whole racist thing has wound me up, I endured the Finsbury park saga and now when Morrissey has come back fighting with two spanking albums and sell out shows in America (including the Hollywood Bowl no less!!!!!!) the hounds are out once again. • "However, what this country should not be ‘flooded with’ is migrants whose home countries display attitudes that are totally at odds with our open-minded British ways. So we should most certainly restrict entry to those from countries rife with misogyny, racism, homophobia, lawlessness and anti-Semitism, or take the risk that their closed-mindedness might well pervert the attitudes of those duller, less enlightened types among our own people."

So people from certain countries who may very well be persecuted for religuous/ political beliefs aren't allowed to Britain 'cos their secular society is different from our idealised libertarian British values?

Well thats just as tawdry as Morrissey's proclamations!

In that case surely the implementation of ID cards and the general erosion of our civil liberties should preclude the British visiting other "open-minded" countries?

  • If only for his 'mad as a fish' books which nestle quite nicely next to David Icke's "12 foot lizards are running the world" publications in the MBS section. However, though he has a point about the misguided nostalgia of Morrissey (but don't we all look back on our formative years with rose tinted specs?) Moz never said he wanted anyone to preserve that vision of a Carry-On England for him. He was just a bit wistful that it had gone and a bit narked that it had happened so fast.
I wish I could be me, now, in the 70's or 80's (well, sort of) but I don't hope that it'll happen, I just accept that the decade and that mad vision of England has gone and isn't coming back. Read the article Copey, before you start berating a compadre.

  • I think the world would be a nicer safer place - maybe - with Bin Laden running around in caves, and Bush as President, homelessness and world hunger, and a black & a woman running for President.

If I threw Mike Gross, Kristeen Dunn, Viscunti, Tim's Bones, Mr Cunter, Billy Gagg and Julien Cock into the swimming pool of life from the Twilight Zone … But in this case and point --- they all drown.
    Hmmm

Anyways, I have to go now and bring my "new" neighbors, the husband is a foreigner, the wife is a stray and the rest in the "new" household I believe to be a bunch of squatters, a cake to welcome them. I'm being serious

  • Who says this guy's opinion matters. Morrissey has as much right to hsi comments as Julian Cope or anyone else.
What does Morrissey living somewhere else have to do with anything.
So someone's opinion is only valid and relevant if they are where they speak of - think of all the people who's opinions won't matter anymore.
And better yet one should only comment on theit own specific current situation as well can't comment on an old friend or old job or old bf/gf.
Luckily we can comment on Julian Cope not mattering as that really isn't a change at all

  • It's always funny to watch the Morrissey cult on here respond to any criticism of Morrissey with their usual teenage, ad-hominem attacks.

Anyone who dares questions Morrissey is relegated to a sub-human level. I tend to think that it stems from many fans trying to impersonate Morrissey's childish flippancy, but I'm beginning to think that it simply stems from immaturity.

Most Morrissey fans are aesthetes, and are not very educated, especially when it comes to issues involving reason.

What Cope said was dead on, and it hardly warrants the Childish responses on here.

Some of you seem to have forgotten that the vast majority of the human population couldn't give two shits about Morrissey. So, remember that when you use it as a response to anything that isn't absolutely glorifying the man.
