In the November 7-13th edition of Dayton City Paper (volume 4, number 84) they have an article from David Thorpe's Burn Unit.

Morrissey is set to release a greatest hits package in 2008, featuring two brand new tracks. Who was it that once said "Reissue, repackage, repackage! Reevaluate the songs/Double pack with a photograph/extra track and tacky badge"? I don't remember. Be sure to pick this up if you're a fan of Suedehead: The Best of Morrissey, The Best of Morrissey, World of Morrissey, Bona Drag, or The CD Singles, Volume 1.

there are a few other Morrissey articles including Kristeen Young being kicked off the tour and Moz's rejection of the Smiths

  • I am really really starting to hate the fact that there is always some smart-arse who comes up with the "repackage" quote. Some people live in the 80's - obviously. I am wellcoming Morrissey's greatest hits with open arms!

  • Give Moz a break! I don't blame him for this 'Greatest Hits' cd. He should grab the money while he can! Very few people buy the real cd anyway and in another 5 to 10 years they probably won't even make cds at all. What's wrong with him making the money while he can? I just hope it's a real "Hits" collection and not a "crap collection" with stupid songs like 'Tony The Pony' on it. That would suck.....

  • These are the stats since 2004. Morrissey has had great singles success since his last Best of came out in the US in 2000 and a Greatest Hits is fully warranted and justified. I think as long as this compilation is done tastefully and comprehensively along the lines of the way The Smiths' 'Singles' was done, then this will be a worthy purchase for certain. Finally a place to have all of the classics in one easy compilation...(Personally I do hope they include Now My Heart is Full and Satan Rejected My Soul; they are much better than their chart position indicates!)
    Cheers!

  • You have to hand it to Moz for taking on such issues that, if he were to prove successful in his career, might come back to haunt him. "Reissue, repackage," "Oh, you silly old man, get off the stage," etc.

Next he'll be sporting a long hair style and people will be pointing to the ol "Long hair is an offense that should be punishable by death." Let's just hope he doesn't go as far as being seen eating a burger...

  • maybe with the money from this, he can eat now.

  • of all things this would be in dayton, which is the hometown of bands like enon, brainiac, guided by voices, and kim deal of the pixies, but the fact that a paper in dayton ohio would talk about morrissey this is quite interesting i dont think he has ever played in crap hole dayton ohio.

  • Well, you are too smart for us guy, who said- reissue, repackage, repackage? Enjoy your minute moment of stardom at the expense of . . . THE MOZ-STER. No soup for you!

  • I'm not savvy to how recording contracts work in the here and now, but, in reading about older acts' musical careers (e.g., Elvis), recording contracts were set up in such a fashion that an act would deliver a certain number of new masters and while being allowed to release so many catalog compilations, i.e., hits albums. This made a heap more sense in the 50s and 60s before albums ruled the day.

If Warners / BMG / whatever the behemoth is called these days are signing Morrissey, they might be opening with a less risky proposition--the greatest hits package--to ensure they make some money in case his new studio album goes bust. With album sales being crippled more and more by downloads, it's a safer bet to go with the catalog. That he has such a run of recent top 20 hits not previously compiled is a golden opportunity for them. They make their safety money and Morrissey can be left to his own devices on the new studio album.

    Cheers,
    Jamie

  • I always saw (heard?) "Paint a Vulgar Picture" as more of an attack on the music industry, rather than the artist in question. That's just me, though..

  • I'd have no problem with this if it was like Lou Reed's excellent 'NYC Man' double-disc compilation - not only remastered, but very nicely packaged, tracks chosen by the artist (a nice mixture of hits and obscurities), and with sleeve notes on the various songs by the artist as well. I may be disappointed..

  • The only disappointing thing is that no new live album is currently planned. I would have been so thrilled to see another fabulous live package to put alongside those unforgettable classics "Beethoven Was Deaf" and "Live at Earl's Court". I would also have liked to have seen ROTT re-released with the B-sides tacked on, just like that wonderful YATQ platinum edition. If Morrissey hadn't announced yet another compilation album for 2008, I would have felt totally shortchanged.

  • So we should all throw out our copies of Hatful of Hollow and Louder than Bombs? Filthy compilations.

Bona Drag, World of, and MEBY aren't greatest hits, after all, they are collections of singles and b-sides.

Really I don't particularly care for true greatest hits collections, but then they aren't meant for us, are they? They're meant for the casual listener. There are any number of bands whose albums I wouldn't buy, but for whom I might pick up a greatest hits disc.

  • Any Morrissey release is a BIG day in my calendar. Plus it will be nice to have a "Best of" with all the Quarry & ROTT singles. The man really really deserves it.
