From Yahoo! Music executive editor Dave DiMartino, an interview with Morrissey in 1985:

A Conversation With Morrissey, 1985 - Dave DiMartino's 360 blog

(Here’s an interview with Morrissey that came fairly early in his career; it took place on June 8, 1985 at the Royal Oak Music Theatre in suburban Detroit. The Smiths would play their third American concert there later that night. I’d later write part of this up as a CREEM feature, but the whole dialog is quite entertaining. I was something of a fan. Incidentally, the picture above was taken the same day. –dd)

  • Yawn, yawn, yawn... He's had a copy of this interview stored within the velvet vaults for over 20 years!

Swallowneck demands more contempary interviews with a real rarity value... so sort it out!

  • The Creem article was quite different than just the verbatim interview he's transcribed here; which is very interesting.

The article had a lot more commentary/opinion from Dave Dimartino. For example, that one bit where SPM says: "But in Rolling Stone, obviously, which got me into lots of trouble, there was a statement that 'Morrissey is a man who says that he is gay.' Which was news to me. And it had an absolutely adverse effect on our chances in America. And obviously Sire backed away immediately. But the journalist who wrote it--who is himself very steeped, he's a very strong voice in the gay movement in New York, I think it was just wishful thinking on his part..." DiMartino interjected that the RS writer in question was certainly *not* a voice in the gay movement, and also that he was right in saying that Morrissey is gay.

It's strange how much of this article I remembered. In fact, I heard Timi Yuro on the radio last week [she had 2 big hits in the U.S. in the 1960's], and I wondered if Moz still likes her.

        • Hi. Someone just steered me here. Just wanted to point out that what I originally wrote in CREEM was this:

"You should be told that the Rolling Stone writer who wrote that statement is not very steeped, not a strong voice in the gay movement in New York, and it wasn't just wishful thinking on his part. You should be told that Morrissey is a man who delights in controversy wherever he can find it - even if it comes down to volunteering erroneous information to another magazine that might print his words verbatim without checking the facts."

And my point was that Morrissey had just told me that a certain Rolling Stone writer was gay who in fact wasn't at all. For that matter he told me he'd never heard Pink Floyd in his life. I found both things interesting.

But I have to say: I never made any statement in CREEM or elsewhere about Morrissey's own orientation--it simply isn't the sort of thing I'd ever do. True fact.
