Arctic Monkeys lay into Lily Allen producer - NME.com

Band 'can't fucking stand' Mark Ronson's Smiths cover

Arctic Monkeys have hit out at Lily Allen's producer Mark Ronson.

The Sheffield four-piece slammed his cover of The Smiths' 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before', which is due out on Monday (April 9).

Frontman Alex Turner said: "I hate all those 'Pop Idol' singers. And let me tell you what I can't stand - that fucking R&B cover version of 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before'."

The band also criticised the state of hip-hop, and declared it officially dead.

Guitarist Jamie Cook told The Sun: "Even music I don't usually listen to, like hip-hop, is obviously bad at the moment. There is no real hip-hop anymore.

"Timbaland is a good producer, but he's in every song right now. Come on, there are other producers - and other beats."

The band are due to release their new single 'Brianstorm' on April 16 before their new album 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' follows a week later.

  • Oh ny lord! Swallowneck is going mental over this story as he feels that any twerp from the "Arctic Spunkers" has no right to slate anyone for making terrible music... and I have to agree as they really are a bag of crap!

I'm sorry - shit is shit and the Arctic Monkeys stink of it!

If you don't like me, don't look at me...
  • I quite like it. It's different. If someone tried to sing it exactly like Moz it wouldn't come over, so at least it's different. And it's really worth listening to! As long as you can accept that the money's all going to Joyce... But what can you do. He was in The Smiths too.

  • Alex Turner is an obnoxious child who should shut up.

I don't like him much, as you may have noticed. Some good songs, though.

  • At least Mark Ronson is old enough to remember The Smiths. Alex Turner is practically a fetus, what would he know.

  • I hate the artic monkeys I can't stand them and their affected gritty working class gimmick song writting... but they're right here that cover is a complete fucking joke and if any of you idiot's actualy like it there's no way you actualy understand the original song or have any appreciation of morrisey's songwritng or vocal delivery, the things that make him what he is.

I expected to see full on rejecttion of such an obvious souless credibility snatch as this and just depressing to see how acepteed and even liked!?!?! it is by most of you, but it Just goes to show how many idiots there truly is out there.

  • According to Mark Ronson's blog - Marr and Moz have both given their blessing to this version - why do people have to be so precious about the Smiths music - it's not untouchable - I think it's cool if some 14-year-old likes the Ronson effort, finds out its a Smiths song and gets into the band and Moz via that route.

  • The artic monkeys are not the best band ever but surely no one can try and argue that a single one of their songs is inferior to mark ronsons awful cover version of a decent smiths song.

the artic monkeys make good songs from nothing. mark ronson has made something deeply unpleasant from a good song.

and what kind of an argument is 'at least mark ronsons old enough to remember the smiths'. well done to mark ronson for being old something we can all achieve by waiting.
