WHERE HAVE ALL THE SUPERSTARS GONE? by Mark Ellen - Mirror.co.uk

Excerpt:

...The 90s was an improvement but not by much. We got Liam Gallagher and Ian Brown, though both are dented by appearing to have bought the book that explains what's expected of a star and studied every page. So here we are in 2007 facing an unavoidable truth - we've only produced two top-grade, rock legends in the past 30 years.

One is a super-charged singer, lyricist and political activist with the advantage of coming from Ireland - making him seem an independent spirit to Europeans and part of a romantic fatherland for many Americans.

And yesterday's receipt of his honorary knighthood won't dent his charisma. He's Bono.

The other is a sexually ambiguous matinee idol whose every song title is an art statement and whose every opinion sounds as if broadcast from a universe free from the irritations endured by us mortals. He's Morrissey.

I've edited music magazines for the past 25 years and I can tell you only these two currently tick all four boxes that define a true mass-market superstar. They sell concert tickets, they sell merchandise, they sell records and they sell magazines.

And the reason we've produced only two is the massmarket is disappearing.

  • Good to hear that Moz is considered a proper super star. I like that fact that both Liam and Ian are headed in the same direction.
ONly thing that sucks is that it took these folk all these years to realize Moz is a star? Been knowing that since the late 80s. Don't know about Bono though.

You're not down with who I am but, look at you now you're all in my hands...tonight I'm a Rock N' Roll Star!!
  • He may be a mess but his name and picture seem to be everywhere. Supermodel fiance and one scandal after another... If He could get semi clean he could be big and plastered everywhere for a long time to come.

Got no money in my pocket...

  • "They were moving forward without maps. They were ploughing their own furrows. The relationships they forged with their following were so intense that new generations can still feel the heat."

Time really does reveal everything. God, I'm suddenly filled with an urge to fly to Sparks...

If Moz did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him.
  • It's a nice compliment I guess, not sure how accurate it is to say Mozz sells Records,Concerts, magazines etc.He should do, but there looks like a lot of spaces in the crowd at shows Ive attended in the past, lets say ten years. Also Mozz aint exactly 'top of the pops' lately sales wise on the cd's,being dropped by record companys for not moving enough "units" after Malajusted, poor sales of YATQ/ROTT.Mozz is still on the outside looking in,I hope he stays there. The idea of seeing him at Giant stadium or the like is simply horrendous.

I have spent my whole life in ruin's, because of people who are nice.
  • Both descriptions sound like they're written about morrissey so does that make morrissey twice the superstar?

    I'll answer it...Yes

  • Bono does indeed sell concert tickets, merchandise, records and all the rest of it. What he has never done, unlike Moz, is make a GREAT record. U2 albums are just product. They appeal to people who don't have a clue. Moz may not be great anymore, but he used to be. Those Smiths albums will still be considered GREAT for decades to come.

  • Morrissey deserves such recognition. Bono does too. I dont know about Ian. But Liam is headed up there, he lacks the artistic and brilliance of the other characters. These days he even lacks a voice. But he is the symbol of a whole new generation, just like Moz is from the one before.

By the way, thats 3/4 Mancs

P.S. where is Noel?? musically, he is more important than Liam and Ian

  • ..."whose every opinion sounds as if broadcast from a universe free from the irritations endured by us mortals."

That's true to an extent. How does he manage that? A lot of commentators have noted over the last few years how Morrissey looks much more comfortable in his skin these days. Maybe he's looked everywhere else and he's found it's the best place to be. That'd be good news for those of us who've got him under our skin a little bit too. : )

  • Old Moz was a superstar , who continues to peak down. In my eyes, a superstar is someone who sells out arena concerts, albums, etc. All Mozzy has is is his dedicated cult following. "Now he is a was." Just like he sings to his tune "Now I am a was." Well, atleast he acknowledges it. Sorry to break it down to you, but the romance is over. He is not who he once was.

  • I would have to agree with this article. In fact just the other day, I was thinking Morrissey is a legend, no artist can compare to his sound, lyrics, and humor. Morrissey has with stood the change of time.
Bono and U2 In my opionion are the biggest band in the world. They also have with stood time, but something about the music continues to drive people to obsession. Long after U2 the band is gone, the music will live.
If your talking about the best artists in this time these guys are True Legends!!!!! May I throw in Depeche Mode!?

  • I'm sure not a lot of us in here love
Morrissey for the fact that he is a star!?
    That means nothing.
    It's what someone stands for.
The whole mass marketing, puppet of the media
    stuff is tedious at best.
And if Morrissey was a mere underground unpopular
artist, well, we'd all still love him.
As for Bono, well I'd rather not say anything.

  • Swallowneck is very wary of using the term "superstar" as it inflates far too many egos. and has cited Robbie Williams as a prime example... Swallowneck much prefers the term "idol" as this is ultimately subjective and therefore much less of a intimidating proposition should you ever actually find yourself in bed with your idol!!!

  • I'm glad Morrissey is not a superstar, which makes him unique. Although he could've been Elvis at some point in the 90's, but didn't happen. So what if his albums aren't that great as before., I still love him to death.I wouldn't want him to be a superstar cause every teeny bopper and ordinary person would jump on the bandwagon. If you ask me, he is fine where he is, that is, in his own category.
