  • Nice sentiment, but is this really necessary?

The "33 1/3" series of books are great; for example, Jeff Buckley fans can also find a 33 1/3 book on "Grace." It isn't just a "reissue, repackage, repackage" (what an original sentiment...) but an essay of sorts on the record in subject. They can sometimes be kind of a dry read, but are interesting nonetheless!

It isn't true in this case; the 33 1/3 series are independent of the album in a sense that it's a book about an album instead of another reissue of the album itself. It just looks as though the CD of "Meat Is Murder" is simply bundled along with the book- no big deal. I'm sure anyone can buy the book separately if they look hard enough.

Oh, and my dig about "what an original sentiment" was meant to poke fun at the whole "Paint A Vulgure Picture" thing. Think of how Steve Martin must feel every single time someone goes up to him and says, "WELL EXCUUUUUUUSE MEEEEEEE!" Maybe ol' Steve thinks to himself, "Ha-hah, yeah, that's great, that's only the tenth time I heard that today..."

It helps if you read Morrissey-Solo comments with a sense of humor, buddyboy.

  • You can buy the book in Fopp or HMV for about three quid and the CD you could probably pick up for about the same. Grand total saving £9, this all depends however on how much value you'd put on the bit of cardboard that holds the two together!

  • Personally I liked it. I think in order to like the book you have to be Catholic and have grown up in the 80s on the eastern coast of the United States. It also doesn't hurt to be somewhat associated with the Boston area. I would be interested to see how Brits reacted to this book. I think it is a very "American" book....

  • ... has nothing to do with the album. It's just the story of how the album relates to the character the book's about. Nothing interesting if you want to find out about the recording atmosphere during MIM sessions or anything like that.

        • Hand is duly raised. Although I have to say that 'Generation X' is his best book.
There's a book that came out in 2005 called 'Heavy Words, Lightly Thrown', about the origins of nursery rhymes and sayings, and the second part of journalist Andrew Collins autobiography is called 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now'. It appears Morrissey's influence is spreading.
I was hoping for self confessed Moz fan J.K. Rowling to call the final installment of her series, 'Harry Potter and All The Lazy Dykes', alas, it hasn't materialised.

  • The book is about The Smiths for about 3% of the time. He talked about 'jacking off' more than the music. And the ending is shit.

    My grade: D-

And only because he tried to write about The Smiths.

  • Anyone who knows about the series will know these are tributes. I haven't come across this one at a bookstore yet, but I'm a big fan of Pernice, who's (obviously) a Smiths fan.

I looked through Colin Meloy's book in the series about the Replacements. It's autobiographical. And in the book he even mentions people were surprised he didn't write about the Smiths instead (though he does state why.)
