Russell Brand, somewhat UK television current person in demand and consistent Morrissey supporter, presented this years drab Brit Awards, of which I caught the start.

When introduced at the start of the show, which was live on ITV, Russell came on to 'Sister I'm a poet'.

Morrissey performed on the Russell Brand show in December and Brand has talked about him in several interviews.

He is probably as pissed off as everyone else that Morrissey, or The Smiths for that matter, have never received a single award and so used this moment to make a point.

I think they will honour Morrissey next year, I do not think they no longer have a choice. even Bob Geldolf was given a life time achievement award, for his one hit wonder in the 1970's.

The Brits make you ashamed to be British.

  • Here are Boomtown Rats' hits in the UK alone, including TWO number ones. Bob Geldof is hardly a one-hit wonder.

    "She's So Modern" (1978) UK #12
    "Like Clockwork" (1978) UK #6
    "Rat Trap" (1978) UK #1
    "I Don't Like Mondays" (1979) UK #1
    "Diamond Smiles" (1979) UK #13
    "Someone's Looking At You" (1980) UK #4
    "Banana Republic" (1980) UK #3
    "The Elephant's Graveyard (Guilty)" (1981) UK #26
"Never In A Million Years" (1981) UK #62
"House On Fire" (1982) UK #24
    "Charmed Lives" (1982)
    "Tonight" (1984) UK #73
"Drag Me Down" (1984) UK #50
    "Dave" (1984) UK #81

  • Most "awards" mean very little. They are useful to help promote the latest product, but most bands don't last long. Publicity for profit the motive.

"Lifetime achievement" awards? Tend to be given to those who hav'nt had a good idea for years.

Why would any self-respecting artist want to "win" a Brit?

  • They can't "honour" someone who refuses to turn up.

Long may Moz continue to do so.

  • fair comment bob geldof did have plenty of hit singles, but its the outstanding contribution to music award he/they won, loads of bands have had a similar success, but its the same old story, if your face fits, and as for the comment on he wont win if he doesnt turn up, well the arctic monkeys did ok for a no show

  • Fair play to Brand for flying Morrissey's flag - I don't see many other people doing it on such a regular basis! The snippet of 'Sister I'm A Poet' as Russell walked onstage was the only thing that got me excited during the show. I agree that the Brits is a bit of a joke - I mean, Take That winning best single hahaha! However, what was annoying was that there was no recognition for Moz in the 'Best British Male' category. Ok, so Ringleader wasn't to everyone's taste but it DID get to Number 1 in the album charts and it does have it's moments as a record, plus there was at least 1 Top 10 single from the album - which was then followed by a 30-odd date sell-out UK tour! Jarvis and Thom Yorke got nominated so what does Moz have to do???

Also, Status Quoasis' live performance was the worst act on stage all night too.......they have become their own tribute band and are a caricature of themselves....

  • I totally agree with you about the Brit Awards. I think Russell Brand could do it better than just playing a song. He had the courage to make very rude comments, but he didn't have the guts to say something in defence of Morrissey. I would be very glad if Morrissey wins an award next year, but...who needs them? At the end of the day, we would love Morrissey and his work with or without award. I'm sure he knows that!

  • Does anybody really think Morrissey actually cares - or indeed - would ever accept such a vacuous symbol as a Brit award?!

  • Yes I also sat up and took note when Brand walked on to Sister I'm a poet. The best bit of music by far all night, pity it was only a snippet. Also on Sunday night on BBC2, the programme Kurt Cobain the last 48 hours played Please Please Let Me Get What I Want over a scene filmed in Brighton. The BBC play a lot of Smiths/Morrissey music on their programmes, obviously someone there has their head screwed on right!

  • ....got so depressed he had to check into therapy because he couldn't win a Brit this time.

    Yeah, yeah.

The Brit Awards (people) take themselves far too seriously. As if Morrissey would need such a pitty award to prove that he's outstanding.
