Jarvis Cocker: 'Maybe I'll do Eurovision next year' - NME.com

Excerpt:

The news comes after recent reports that Morrissey was asked if he was interested in writing an entry.

Cocker said: "I'm not going to compete with Mozzer if he's going to do it. I'm sure he'll write something good.

  • And why should he? Jarvis has had to pluck that track he submitted for Nancy Sinatra's album as a single for himself! Swallowneck would not touch Cocker with yours!!!

  • Jarvis Cocker is riding a comeback wave and maybe needs to be cautious. I was speaking to someone yesterday who’s involved in the management of the JackL (L for Lukeman) band, a highly-rated Irish cabaret-pop act, and who’s also a Morrissey fan. He told me that Jack L had been approached earlier this year to represent Ireland but they decided to decline, not feeling established enough to take a fall one way or the other.

However there was no hesitation about supporting the idea of Morrissey going for it in the UK because his career has been iconically fortified through time. In fact if anything his success has stepped up cumulatively after rising from the ruins of what could have looked like one near-failure after another. The Eurovision lark might be more like a hobby for him; it shouldn’t change much for him whether he goes for it or not.

Still, even the idea alone has been captivating!

  • isn't very good in my opinion. My brother was also speaking to someone who does promotional work for Jarvis Cocker, he thought the album was terrible but said it didn't really matter what he thought because they'd managed to get magazines to give it good reviews anyway.

I feel the album lacks any piercing lyrics which used to be his forte, it sometimes has sparks of good music, but I expect this is largely down to Richard Hawley who worked on the album.

But who cares when the marketing department strikes a deal....

  • The media reaction to Cocker's album might have been a big success (culminating in a Brit nomination) but it's been a commercial disaster. Debuting at 30 something and just two weeks in the top 75. Will have sold less than 10,000.
The first single has only just made the top 40 this week.
Cocker is a great pop person. Funny, original, great image, good interviews but his songwriting skills (particularly musical) are third rate.
Having said that, I've heard one song off the album (not current single) which had a pretty catchy chorus...

  • Alright calm down, Jarvis is only expressing an interest in writing something for the competition. He says he doesn't want to 'step on Morrissey's toes', so don't worry. He has an equal right to show an interest in Eurovision (although I can't see the appeal myself) and I think certain Moz fans are taking their devotion to the point of pettiness. Both Morrissey and Jarvis are gifted songwriters and either of them would do a great job.
