I don’t know if you’re all aware of this, but we’re carrying out an experiment over on the message boards.

We’re going to attempt to download a Smiths or Morrissey song, which we all love and thought should have been released as a single, into the official UK top 40 (original thread). It could work because of the new downloading rule which allows any song old or new, single or album track to be included into the top 40.

There’s a poll going on at the moment to decide the song. The poll will end on Saturday the 20th of January.

After the choice has been made a date to start the experiment will be decided.

For this to work we need as much fans to get involved as possible so please vote and take part.

This is a great opportunity for us to come together as fans and create a little bit of history.

Thank you

  • You guys will not listen - if Swallowneck can't tape it off the radio then forget it!!! To him it's 21st Century scum tactics like this that has kiled the 7 inch single.

Meanwhile, I'll just burn it onto my Ipod!

  • Wouldn't it be marvelous if Swallowneck's suggestion of He Cried was embraced by all of the Moz fans and this 1997 classic was a number one smash hit???

  • Nice exercise in media manipulation, too.

"Pigsty" should be the song - his most current cri de coeur really should chart.

"Meat is Murder" would be a beautiful gesture as well.

  • I saw on your forum poll that you were disappointed with the voting for the download song. There are people who don't vote; others like me who are not logged into the forums, and more again who don't look at them at all but do look at the main page. So if you've chosen Pigsty which stands as probably the best now for all the reasons mentioned, and if you're going ahead, you should probably stick with it. It has pleased more strangers to Morrissey's music than any I can think of.

Another poll that would be interesting to do if DavidT would agree is a simple count, from the start of the appointed week, of how many who visit here have downloaded the song - which you could probably multiply a few times for the real figure. It would be an unusual poll with presumably just one option - did you download Pigsty?! - but useful for an idea of how your project is faring.

During this week here in Ireland, one afternoon radio programme on one station managed to persuade listeners to re-insert Johny Cash's song "A Boy named Sue" into the Top 30, coming in at number 28. So don't lose heart! However, think what has to be clarified before starting and who can answer your outstanding industry questions e.g. does this need to be registered somewhere as a single to be counted at all; which nationalities do you want to go for it; have you a convenient list of download sites to inform the willing and able etc? And whatever happens, well done on all your work so far! Bon courage, bon chance!
