Johnny Marr talks about Modest Mouse and The Smiths on the breakfast program, there should be a podcast of it on http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/

  • He has a staggering collection of Johnny Marr interviews on tape... if there's a certain interview he wants to hear, he'll just dig out the cassette!

  • actually J Marr was on rage last weekend (australian tv show).
They re-run an episode of Rock Arena from 1987 which was an one hour interview with Marr and some Smiths videos. The interview was especially interesting because it was pre-breakup of the smiths and Marr certainly didn't sound like he was about to leave.

I don't know if a video or transcript of this is anywhere on the net - but it was pretty interesting stuff. He slagges off the Jam and clash. Said the only thing he liked about punk was Patti Smith and complained that UK punk bands de-valued music/bands and led to current (1980's) bands being treated poorly by record labels.

He also talked about the future plans for the Smiths - they weren't going to do a UK tour or go anywhere near australia/japan. He sounded kinda fed up with touring. He complained about videos - he didn't form a band to make videos. And talked a bit about there being a Smiths manifesto - that they weren't like other bands - weren't into the whole rock star-drugs thing.

On the whole he sounded a bit grumpy but also defiant and committed to the smiths - strange given not long after the interview he left.
