Morrissey Hurts Hotel Chelsea's Feelings
The poor Hotel Chelsea is feeling a bit down after finding a letter from one Steven Morrissey (known to most as. simply: Morrissey). The letter states that he will be leaving (artless) Texas to do a photoshoot using the hotel as an "insignificant background".

Of course, legends are often forgiven, and this is no exception. The Hotel Chelsea bloggers write: "Since your letter is dated January 16, 1981, I feel confident you have repented of your sin of false pride by this time. You can come back to the Chelsea and play a concert for us anytime."

Here's the full letter:

  • The smiley-face seems a bit odd to me. Wonder if it was added later?

  • Er, The Smiths didn't even exist then...

Why would there be mention of a photoshoot?

  • Morrissey was still in his humdrum town, absolutely too poor to afford a trip to the USA...unless there are circumstances someone might know that I don't know of here that brought him over there...But as far as I'm concerned, according to what I read from (allegally)his own account, he was very poor at that time, no band, no notoriety, until the Smiths happened, in 1983. It's true though that the texan scenario may not be very appealing to those used to live either in places like Europe (with so many little stores) or in places full of the most exuberant vegetation, like in the Caribean Islands, or in Brazil. I was never too passionate about Texas' cactus and rocks myself, but I only lived there for two years, and I was only six at the time (sic). However, didn't our Moz say, while he lived in LA, that he spent hours and hours driving across the Mexican border? He said that, and I think he couldn't do that without appreciating the vast and dry paysage of Mexico, I suppose. So I think if it is actually true that he ever wrote such a thing, he should be more than forgivable by now. As for me, I long to exorcise my own wrongful boredom of Texas (and New Mexico, where I was born), by maybe one day getting to see the stalactites and White Sands over there. That is surely not an insignificant background, and I'm sure our present-day Moz would agree.

  • He spoke of this in another pen pal letter.

It was probably to the same man in Scotland.

  • Morrissey visited the U.S. two or three times before he joined The Smiths. He's been to Colorado. Again, you would think that most die hard fans would have already known this from his pen pal letters which are rather easy to find.

In Rogan's book Morrissey supposedly got home-sick, and his mom had to sell her car to fly him back home. LOL!

These maternal indulgences speaks volumes about him as an individual. This is a warning to all future mothers out there. Unless of course you aspire to raise a truly peculiar pop star.

  • You can see the faint/backwards text of:

"There was a boy his name was Jim,
his friends were very good to him."

    A reference to James Dean?

  • The folks on the blog didn't catch Morrissey's ironic tone in the letter, but of course I know he was being facetious. Being a great student of pop music that he is, he knew very well about the history of Chelsea Hotel and its significance, particularly to the 70s punk scene.

The Chelsea was a popular subject in songs from the Ramones, Patti Smith and Nico. It also provided an (in)significant backdrop for alot of notable events and was the home of many famous artist and writers; Patti Smith lived there, Malcolm McLaren stayed there when he was managing the New York Dolls; its also the place where Dylan (Bob) met Dylan (Thomas); Janis Joplin enjoyed her Southern Comfort there; and Leonard Cohen said it is his favorite hotel. It is also the place where Nancy Spungeon met her unfortunate demise supposedly at the hands of Sid Vicious.

Before Morrissey was a Smith, he was a writer. Perhaps the photograph he mentions was to be used as an author's photo for a book that may have been in the works.
