From the January edition of Esquire (page 36, U.S. edition):

"Johnny Marr Vs. Morrissey: The Smiths rank with the Police as one of the most reunion-resistant bands ever. Our pick: Marr. The new Modest Mouse record features Marr as a full-blown member -- a move more intriguing than the sum of Morrissey's solo efforts."

Biggest load of crap I've ever heard in my life. I love and respect Jonny Marr, but really this is just toss.

  • This from the publication responsible for bringing the world, "What I've Learned" by Katie Couric?

    Here's how it went:

EDITOR: What promos do we have?
EDITORIAL ASSISTANT: A bunch, but I took some home
    EDITOR: Bring me the leftovers
    (minutes later)
EDITOR (to music columnist): I need these reviewed by 6PM today.
MUSIC COLUMNIST: Shit; who've I heard of out of these?

  • That various hipsters are going to talk up Modest Mouse in order to slag off Morrissey. It's inevitable.

However, I don't think there are enough people that stupid to make a difference. I've heard the new single and it's terrible. A Talking Heads ripoff with a distinct lack of tune and vocals that sound like they were recorded under water.

  • you know....since the last Electronic album, I've craved JM in a big way. There's no one like him....and never will be.

  • Morrissey's career post 1987 has had its up's, its downs, its extreme highs and extreme lows.

Johnny Marr's post-1987 career has had one up in the form of The The. Outside of that he has done nothing.

But that's ok because he looks like yer guy out of Shameless, hangs round the bike sheds and smokes ciggies with blokes and wears a cool jacket.

    Ponses!!

  • Take Mozzer and Johnny - Both tremendously talented, then see what they do with the rest of their lives... Mozzer records many and varied LPs and singles, varied by quality and content... Most do exceptionally well...

Johnny however, despite his promise, despite that fact that he truely is a great guitarist still, does very little... Just can't seem to get it together, and noone can work out why...

At best this article supports the under dog - at worst it's just pathetic... I really wanted to like Modest Mouse - I did... I really wanted to see JM do something incredible again... Oh yeah, the jangly guitar is still very much in evidence, but it's the backdrop to nothing...

  • Johnny was my biggest hero back in the Smiths days, but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks he has done better post 1987 than Morrissey. I certainly don't. Johnny is a busted flush. At least Moz are still capable of coming up with a classic or two from time to time.

  • I would have suggested Morrissey... until quite recently that is! Swallowneck received the new J Marr book for Xmas and is enjoying the White Dice chapters especially!

  • Johnny- Electronic, The The, Modest Mouse

Alain- wrote and played on Your Arsenal, Vauxhall and I, Southpaw Grammar, You are the Quarry. Plus featured prominently on ROTT, while writing the classic "Life is a Pigsty."

Johnny Marr was great in the 80's but in the 'What have you done for me lately?' world we live in, Alain Whyte has been much more successful the last 15 years.
