Morrissey Says He'll Never Be Knighted - Filter
by Staff | 12.29.2006

Morrissey has said that he has wrecked his chances of ever being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II by writing songs like The Smiths' "The Queen Is Dead." However he insists that he is more deserving of knighthood than many of its recipients. On December 23rd at Manchester's G-Mex arena the 47 year old singer said from the stage:

"Just look at who has been honoured already. Mad Irish singer Daniel O'Donnell has an MBE [Member of the Order of the British Empire] and obese Jamie Oliver has an OBE [Officer of the Order of the British Empire]."

Performers who have been knightted recently include Tom Jones, Mick Jagger and Bono. Morrissey was recently voted the #2 British Living Icon by BBC's Culture Show. He was beat out by nature documentary maker David Attenborough, while Paul McCartney placed third.

Morrissey: I deserve an honour more than 'mad' Daniel

Singer Morrissey accepts he has wrecked his chances of being honoured by the British Queen Elizabeth II - but he insists he is more deserving of a title than many recipients.

The former Smiths frontman distanced himself from the establishment with tracks like The Queen is Dead, but now concedes he would be proud to pick up a prize like those given to Tom Jones and Mick Jagger.

"It's songs like that (The Queen Is Dead) which mean my chances are slim," said the 47-year-old.

"But just look at who has been honoured already. Mad Irish singer Daniel O'Donnell has an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) and obese Jamie Oliver has an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire)."

  • I really hope Morrissey has not actually made these comments. I doubt he has, or rather I hope.
If so, why would he want the recognition from the royals anyway?

  • How humiliating, it sounds he really wants to be knighted!

Who would have quessed, old rebellion against established 'suit societys' ways and honors has turned to lust for them.

  • Here’s some information from Wikipedia -

      - The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry established on 4 June 1917 by King George V. The Order includes five classes in civil and military divisions; in decreasing order of seniority, these are

    • Knight Grand Cross or Dame Grand Cross (GBE)
    • Knight Commander or Dame Commander (KBE or DBE)
    • Commander (CBE)
    • Officer (OBE)
    • Member (MBE)

Only the two highest ranks entail admission into knighthood allowing the receiver to use the title 'Sir' (male) or 'Dame' (female) before one's name, such as Sir Terry Wogan who is a KBE.
There is also a related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are not members of the Order, but who are nonetheless affiliated with the Order. This medal is no longer conferred in the United Kingdom, but is still used in some overseas territories and Commonwealth nations.

The Order's motto is For God and the Empire. It is the most junior of the British orders of chivalry and has more members than any other.
Members of all classes of the Order are assigned positions in the order of precedence. Knights Grand Cross and Knights Commander prefix "Sir", and Dames Grand Cross and Dames Commander prefix "Dame", to their forenames (never surnames, so Sir Antony Sher can be shortened to Sir Antony, but not Sir Sher… -

I think he might like ‘Dame Grand Cross’! The forename requirement would seem to be the decider against! Sir Moz? No, he doesn’t care much for Moz, he said once that it sounded like a floor cleaner or something! Still, for painting the urban English landscape in music through poetry like no one else has done and for his dramatic delivery, what other commensurate national honour is there to bestow?

  • MORRISSEY NEVER SAID THOSE WORDS.
This article is a made-up mish mash of snippets and lies.

How sad that some of you would even consider it to be true. If you don't know this then what do you know?
Yes, he commented on Oliver and O'donnell at the GMEX, but that is all.
But I'm not surprised that you believe this crap.
You deserve each other, but not him.

  • It's fascinating how Morrissey's "fans" love to believe anything negative about him isn't it? There are already more responses to this story than all the others posted today.

FYI this is a case of chinese whispers taken from a joke he made at G-Mex about the honours system at the expense of Jamie Oliver and Daniel O'Donnell. But you really want to believe he is jealous of those two individuals, don't you.

  • After all the negative comments he's made about the Royal Family, I can't see why it would matter to him one way or another. He was joking, I think. I hope. :P

You guys really need to abandon the fairy tale play.

LMAO! No, sweetheart. If anything, this site loves to qualify and excuse every action the man has made. It's just that some mentally healthy individuals find it necessary to call him out on his rather clear contradictions, instead of treating him like a religious shrine.

  • .... of how the media works and of how gullable people are. Had this been mentioned in something like the 'Sun' I could understand this kind of reaction. But on here ?

I was at the G-MEX and he merely made a comment about Jamie Oliver and Daniel O'Donnell in his own sarcastic way (which surely we all know how to interpret???, see also posts above), following 'English Blood, Irish Heart', and stating that now all his chances of being included in any honours lists are gone.

Can this really be a point of discussion? Next, you'll be debating how he would love to be on the BRITS... I think it's time for me to say goodbye to this site for a while.

I look forward to meeting the real fans at the shows.

If you don't like me, don't look at me...
  • He mentioned having come second in the Living Icons vote and that he was up against a couple of Sirs. He said that 'Fattenborough' had won it, and what a great cultural icon he was to represent the whole of the UK (sarcasm was evident).
Then, to paraphrase him accurately, he said he effectively ruined his chances of being offered an honour a long time ago (at this point a huge grin was on his face) and who in their right mind would want an honour these days, considering the calibre of people who receive them (to quote him directly) "nasty Jamie Oliver is an OBE, which stands for Obese Member of the British Empire, and Daniel O Donnell, who I know you all love, is an MBE, which stands for Mad Member of the British Empire." Note, he didn't actually call either person obese or mad (though we all know how much he hates Jamie Oliver ... and all modern celebrity chefs are worthy of hatred just for being irritating little trolls).
I can't remember what he said after that, but I'm pretty certain he launched into the next song.
So, there you go. Do you really think a man who called for the assasination of Margaret Thatcher and the abolition of the royal family would even consider feeling left out when it came to an honour? The press are buggers when it comes to 'quoting'; take it with a hearty pinch of salt people.
