Mojo magazine has listed 'Hatful Of Hollow' as the No.2 'Essential Rough Trade Album' in this month's magazine.

In a regular feature called 'How To Buy...', Mojo readers vote for the albums in a particular genre, or by a particular artist that they feel the uninitiated should purchase.
Previous polls have listed such items as Prog Rock, The Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, 4AD Records, Solo Beatles records etc.

'Hatful Of Hollow' was beaten to the No1 spot by 'Grotesque(After The Gramme)' by The Fall.
The blurb accompanying 'Hatful Of Hollow' reads: "In the wake of The Smiths eponymous debut album, Morrissey received letters asking if their recordings for John Peel would be released. After completing the recording of 'Meat Is Murder', the decision was taken to issue a stop-gap, budget-price album in November 1984. Housed in a gatefold sleeve and just under an hour long, 'Hatful Of Hollow' was astoundingly cohesive, sporting b-sides alongside superior BBC takes of 'Back To The Old House', 'Still Ill' and more. These disparate sources allowed 'Hatful Of Hollow' to encapsulate The Smiths as they hurtled towards icon status".
Mojo reader Stain Boy adds: "This is the one I play the most. Probably the greatest ragbag of greatness ever".

The full Top 10 is:
10: 'The Raincoats' by The Raincoats
9: 'Inflammable Material' by Stiff Little Fingers
8: 'On Fire' by Galaxie 500
7: 'Up The Bracket' by The Libertines
6: 'Songs To Remember' by Scritti Politti
5: 'I Am A Bird Now' by Antony & The Johnsons
4: 'Is This It' by The Strokes
3: 'Colossal Youth' by Young Marble Giants
2: 'Hatful Of Hollow' by The Smiths
1: 'Grotesque(After The Gramme)' by The Fall

  • Grotesque is my favourite Fall album. (Still Smiths are better)
The Raincoats should be number 3. Glad to see there is some new interest in them recently.
Gina Birch is currently working on the new material.

  • so pleased to see Hatful getting recognised in a poll for once. always been my favourite smiths lp, so many brilliant songs and such great performances, you could easily argue this was their peak. ratf, these things, genius. just genius. and hsin? too.
oh, and for what its worth, "this is our music" by galaxie 500 is a much better lp than "on fire". download '4th of july' if you can, brilliant stuff.

  • 'Hatful' is a wonderful, vital piece of work. The songs are compelling and rich. Morrissey and Marr poured their hearts and souls into that album. If only Morrissey could have found the same inspiration when he wrote and recorded ROTT. I firmly believe he can return to glory on his next album if he follows his heart again like when he did 'Hatful.' Forget about sales and chart positions, Moz. Make another masterpiece. You can do it again.

  • I can't believe that they beat The Smiths, but what a band to beat you eh? MES is GOD!!! If I ever get that record shop I keep meaning to own, my two interview questions will be name your top five Smiths/Top five Fall and who's best, MES or Moz - discuss... If I ever get a glassy eyed one who can't answer cos they don't know the work of Manchesters greatest sons, they'll not be worth a job ;)

  • Anyone who thinks Grotesque is better than Hatful is a bell end.

  • Anyone who thinks Hatful of Hollow (truly wonderful as it is) is better than Grotesque is a bell end.
Without The Fall there would be no Smiths.

  • I think a lot of people commenting here seem to feel that this is a popularity concert between The Smiths and The Fall....but the emphasis of the voting is purely on that which makes a better introduction to, or indeed sampler of, Rough Trade Records.

When Rough Trade were at their peak...in fact when they were the very embodiment of 'British Indie Music'(i.e. the early to mid 80s)...then The Fall were very much the top dogs.
'Grotesque(After The Gramme)' is indeed the best example of The Fall's polemic bulletins from that era...rough, raucous, brittle, sinewy, coruscating, surreal...and quite brilliant. The album sums up the whole DIY post-punk ethics of that era, colliding such influences and peers as Swell Maps, Can, Wire, Young Marble Giants, rockabilly, Krautrock etc.
Mark E Smith, lyrically, was never better than here, especially on such tracks as 'Impression Of J Temperance', 'C-n-C/Mithering' and 'The N.W.R.A'(The North Will Rise Again).

Whilst 'Hatful Of Hollow' in never considered as The Smiths best album, it is, without doubt, the best introduction to casual listener, or the uninitiated, to wonder of The Smiths.
