WELCOME TO A NEW JUNGLE: The word from London is that Rod Smallwood is finally untangling himself from Sanctuary, the company he co-founded, taking cornerstone act Iron Maiden with him. Will his departure from the much-maligned company clear the way for Merck Mercuriadis to get his own exit deal done so that he can join Irving Azoff's management firm? Merck's situation is relatively complicated, as he will continue to manage Elton John for Sanctuary while taking Morrissey and Guns N' Roses with him to Azoff. (10/19a)

  • Hmm... there was something in the forums about Morrissey scheduled to appear in a GNR concert in December. That makes more sense if they're both managed by Merck. Still strange, though...

  • Are they taking Attack Records? Which is a reason why I see Morrissey staying at Sanctuary, despite me really wanting Morrissey to leave the bankrupt Sanctuary.

  • What about Rick Roskin, Peter Asher, John Jackson, Mike Hinc, Brian Murphy, Clear Channel, SJM, Simon Moran and Chris York? Indeed, what about Tina Chnag? Will the passive 1 in 280 be welcome for bottom baptisms? Well, yes!

Lets hope the marketing of the passive, is one that results in a Mozzer Christmas number one. It not impossible!!

All this and more will be answered in the next episode of soap.

I'm reeling from the detail that Morrissey,Elton John and Guns'n'roses are in the same sentence....
Mind you i don't think you could get a more charged package of repression, paranoia and "issues" ... unless Quentin Crisp and Ernest Hemingway did a little writing together for some forgotten radio soap opera...
Screw jumping ship..they should all "vacation" together at fire island.... ....Let me hear you exclaim "hell yeah!"...

  • Who will be left at Sanctuary?
Should it not change it's name to Marie Celeste Records?

Can company directors leave a failing company with the artist's they manage? Isn't this termed "asset stripping"?

Heaven forbid! - Couldn't Morrissey get stuck at Sanctuary - whether he likes it or not?

    I dunno. Do you?

    • I've known Merck for 25 years and tho I haven't been in touch with him for a few months as the Sanctuary thing has really imploded, I can assure you that he's taking care of his relationship with his main artists-Moz, Axl and Elton and probably negotiating his way out the door with assets in hand. His stock bonuses in the last few yrs are now worthless and he'll walk with something of value. He's recently sold his loft in NYC to move to LA. Artists of this stature usually have a key man clause built into their contracts and Merck's relationship with them is very strong. Elton, in particular, has often sung his praises as has Lou Reed.

Merck's always been a Morrissey fan and will continue to work with him if it's feasable. The Attack label is a vanity label situation and relatively pointless in this regard. Mozzer probably controls the rights to his own recordings at this stage.

The curious thing, if word about the Azoff bit is true, is that Merck will have found somebody to work with who's shorter than he is.

Also, Merck gets his way with dealing with the positive while Irv is a screamer/ranter from way back. Sounds like a perfect good cop/bad cop scenario to me.

      • Well Merck's already lost Elton, probably the most profitable of his artists (ie. the one most likely to be a corporate whore).

"Twenty-First Artists, part of the Sanctuary Group, has announced changes in the Elton John management team. Creative management services will in future be undertaken by Clive Banks in the UK and rest of the world and Johnny Barbis in the US. Both Clive and Johnny have recently joined Twenty-First. By mutual agreement Merck Mercuriadis steps down from the creative management role – but continues within the Sanctuary Group as manager of a number of artists including Axl Rose and Morrissey. Business and personal management of Elton John continues through Twenty-First Artists, London."

  • Who cares whether you love her or not? Or what you think is "cool"? She's objectively a disgusting person with no business associating herself with the music of Morrissey.
