Once again, a minor mention, but it shows that Moz is still more than worthy of talking about.

Paul Weller:

"There is a renaissance of British music out there at the moment with bands like The Kooks and The Zutons.

"When Morrissey says that British radio has got it all wrong, that's rubbish!

"What, 'cos you're not playing his latest record? That's not necessarily a bad thing is it?"

  • Please - that's not a "slam." Why resort to the hyperbole of the advertising age?

  • Weller is entitled to think what he likes about Moz's solo stuff.

If he thinks The Kooks are a good band, more power to him. I don't think they are, but that's my opinion.

Anything great that's happening in British music will happen beneath Weller's narrow retro-guitar radar.

  • Weller could have thought of better examples, such as 'The Editors' or 'Dirty Pretty Things'. Their albums are the best of the year by far; I'd place them above ROTT.
As a Moz fan, I'll continue to buy and enjoy his records no matter what he does, but I doubt he's ever going to release another solo album as consistently brilliant as 'Your Arsenal' or 'Viva Hate', unless something cataclysmic occurs in his older and wiser world - and I wouldn't wish any more soul destroying misery on that man. It's natural that, when artists get to the age of Weller or Moz, they lose some of the anger and the inspiration that kept their hormones raging and their brain constantly ticking. To employ a well worn cliche, they mellow.
Nevertheless, Weller should have contained his bitter little snipe and refrained from commenting on Moz, because it smacks of jealousy that his one time aquaintance can still acheive a number one album and a sell out tour. Moz loved Weller, and Weller thought Moz was the bees knees at one time ... so what changed?
I agree that there's a "renaissance of British music", at the moment, but doesn't that just mean that there's a thinner spreading of shit? I love Paul Weller, but he lost some of my respect when he played with the perpetually irritating 'Hard - Fi'; please Moz, never do an 'appearance' for another band.

"Watch the video of Morrissey doing this song with the Smiths, Johnny Marr’s guitar work & force was so superior. Listen to the pace, timing, watch the energy, vibe & drive Morrissey had. This is just a sad version of the original, it's sad to see Morrissey fat, old & completely lackluster. Like watching a funeral march. Getting old, that part he can't help, none of us can. The FAT part though, come on tubby, you've got enough money in your account, hire a personal trainer & get to work fatso."

  • I loved the Style Council, completely. I utterly adored them.

I am mad at Weller, however, for jumping on the 'bandwagon' of 'house' music in the late '80s.

What angers me more- is that he continued to record records under the umbrella of the Style Council even though he lost interest in the 'project' altogether.

Maybe I'm naive about the music industry in general, but Weller reminded me of a 'fat cat.'

    Always,

  • His songs are ugly, humourless things stuffed full of clichés and platitudes sung in that stupid fake american accent. You're from Woking you giant tit! 4 miles from my home town, sing in your own accent for f***s sake. His singing voice was pretty awful in the Jam but at least it had some honesty. The man is a humourless ludicrously over-rated tosser. And if you need any more evidence, well he's just stated that he likes the Kooks, probably the second worse band of all time (just behind Toploader).

  • Why does everyone feel the need to proclaim that Paul Weller is shit just because he says something negative about Moz? I'm no fan of his, but I don't really care what he says about Morrissey. You're a bunch of saddos. Rushing to his defence like he's your fucking father or something.

  • I thought it was pretty funny. I love both Moz and Weller and it's humorous how Weller is correct about Moz slagging off British radio because they didn't play his record. It's so funny when over the top statements ring true. But that's just Moz as much as Weller's comment about it being a good thing is just Weller.

I remember Weller talking about being baffled at Morrissey's/The Smiths musical success way back in the 1980's and, of course, Morrissey has always hated British radio for not playing him. 20 years later, both are true to form, no surprises. The quirks and familarity of our musical hereos.. it's almost soothing.. ahh.

  • singer/ songwriters of all time ,in 2 of the greatest live bands my opinion. The Jam paved the way for the Smiths, rickenbackers, back garden lyrics, songs about life in England under Tory rule etc.I can see why Moz would have been influenced by Weller and Weller is often cited as miserable too !I dont care too much for anything of Wellers after the jam, I do think Moz's solo work is far better , but with both, their first 3 years work is some of the most exciting British pop music and still stands up today.
