Mrs. Woolf writes:
I know most of you might not be interested in a bunch of French blah, blah, blah, but I thought that you might want to know at least the face of the name that Morrissey mentions in "At Last I Am Born", Claude Brasseur. I thought he was was "under the ground" like many of Moz's idols and gods, but he is alive, and very surprised and bewildered that he got mentioned by such an exquisite and interesting pop singer. If you go to youtube.com and type "Claude Brasseur Talking About Morrissey On French TV", you'll see a cute French girl with bangs giving Brasseur Morrissey's biography, hardly refraining from interrupting everybody else (acutally she goes on and on with her story of Moz). She then emphasizes the complexity of Moz's lyrics, the work that it takes to decipher their message (something the French love to do) and she gets Brasseur more and more hooked. Towards the end of the "introduction", a famous Morrissey's single is played and Brasseur loves it - and a crowd (of French people, never having heard of Moz before and of all ages!!) goes so bonkers they throw their arms up! Well, for anyone interested in intercultural relations...The best sentence pronounced in the show is something like "Moz is very bizarre, but this is because we love him".

  • Hahahaha! Goddammit, I cannot get Youtube to load right now.

Does the girl actually say 'Moz is very bizarre, but this is because we love him', not '...this is why we love him'? 'Moz is very bizarre, but this is BECAUSE we love him' is one of the best quotes I've heard in awhile.

    Great submission, Mrs Woolf.

host: ok, now lets welcome Claude Brasseur
      (he enters)
CB - we're all one family

      host - what?

      female guest - why?

CB - a family of actors (small talk etc now Moz bit)

Host - we're now going to talk music with Tanya Brunnarosso(? girl who asks questions) and we're going to talk about you, i'm not sure if you're aware but you know Morrissey, the singer,a cult singer...

CB - i know that he knows of me but i don't know him ...

host - he has done a song about-

TB - you, or rather, with you in it - you didn't know this? Visibly !

(look of shock on his face)

host - its news to him! really !

TB - yes, Morrissey is a cult pop singer -

CB - perhaps he wants me to get lost !

TB - no! wait until you hear this, its really quite a nice story, yes Mr Brasseur, you are celebrated by another iconic figure, Morrissey, who was by the way the singer of the Smiths, and now you can hear the part where he mentions your name (the Moz lyrics of At Last I am Born follow)

TB- its very bizarre! ok, i'll try to translate the lyrics for you, its "From difficult child etc to CB" those are the words, so i've been trying to understand as its a bit weird, or perhaps you have an explanation?

CB - blah blah blah is often what people say to me when i'm talking!

TB - no but (interrupted by laughter and applause) going from difficult child to spectral hand, then to Claude Brasseur, i think that means you represent God for him.

host - you're an icon for Morrissey

TB - someone above man, like, you know?

host - do you know him?

CB - hmm surprising ! surprising and i must admit, a bit worrying! though i think i'd like to get to know him! finding that out on live television though ... !!

TB - he has mentioned you whilst on stage in France, (insisting) he has mentioned you whilst on stage at the Olympia (in Paris), and I think that he is a big fan of yours. yes, so ... Morrissey was singer of the Smiths, a venerated group in the eighties and nineties, with Johnny Marr, they did the biggest anthems of English pop, lets call it, with very sensitive lyrics, he describes well the life of the english teenager who finds it difficult to integrate themself into society, ...

host- the youth of that time

TB - yes, the youth of the time, a rather depressed youth nonetheless ... and another surprising thing about Morrissey, not only does he write songs for you, he is worshipped by Latino fans, in Mexico his fans are known as (something in Spanish!) and also, in Los Angeles, its Latinos that listen to him, quite far removed from his fanbase in England, ...

CB - perhaps when i see him i'll congratulate him on his career! (audience laughs)

TB- yes, and now you might recognise them, lets see (clip with latino fans is played)

      host- very latino

TB- yes, very Latino, very rockabilly, though Morrissey is rather more Pop though, though everything is bizarre with him, and i promise, she can tell you -

      female guest - yes, yes

CB- everything is weird with this boy

TB- yes, and in his last album, the song You Have Killed Me ...

      (they pass CB lyric booklet)

CB- you arent going to make me read now, are you?!

TB- .. we can hear an extract, i dont understand the lyrics, but you'll see the video is quite bizarre too, like everything else - it is Morrissey after all, (YHKM clip plays)...

      (loud audience applause and cheering)

      host - excellent

TB - (says something i cant make out! then, referring to CD-) i don't know who to offer this to, Clementine is a fan, but Claude Brasseur is in it -

      host- Clementine's a fan ? oh we'll give two away then !

      CB - ah two?

Host- we'll have lots of them!

      CB- we'll have lots!

Host - thank you very much Tanya

      voilĂ ! hope that helps!

"All the people I like are those that are dead."
  • Morrissey received a passing reference last week (definitely not even close to the level mentioned in the above story but the reference is so delicious, I can't help myself!) on VH1's program "Best Week Ever." One of the commentators was discussing the TV show "Pants Off Dance Off" (a show in which the uninhibited remove their clothing against a backdrop of their favorite video). One of the participants was a dwarf (little person) who stripped in what was described by the commentator as Morrissey-esque style. Little man, you have much to be proud of.
