An anonymous Vancouverite writes:
In Canadian music monthly Exclaim's June cover feature on indie violinist extraordinaire Owen Pallet - known for his solo work as Final Fantasy, as well as for his work both with the Arcade Fire and on the top rated CBC radio program Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe - Pallet names Morrissey alongside Yukio Mishima as his favourite Facists.

  • As it appears this Owen Pallet finds it acceptable to fling about unresearched and ill-informed opinions, I assume he'll be happy for me to say that he is undoubtedly my favourite seal-clubbing moron.

(P.S. I'm not having a go at Canadians in general before I get complained at. In fact in my experience Canada generally has a very good approach to animal welfare and conservation and is one of my favourite places to be.)

  • i didn't read the part where he labelled Morrissey as a facist? But i don't think 'He Poos Clouds' is cleverer than 'the sun shnes out of our behinds'

  • I saw this guy in Manchester recently on a night off inbetween Morrissey shows. He was okay until this clichee indian looking girl came on to do some "films" - which was basically fiddling with overhead foils showing trees and people on horses. From that point on, I just thought they were taking the piss. But they were quite serious.

  • I'm glad you all spewed your venom over this, but have you narrow-minded people actually read the article? I know that would require some concentration for your addled brains, but try having a go. He doesn't call Morrissey a fascist anywhere. Although he does call him the most interesting figure in pop in the last 30 years. Shame on David T for posting this.

  • It seems entirely possible that he is referring to an actual facist. One who is in love with the face, or one who views themselves with a sense of self-importance. If he were to really label someone a fascist, one would hope he knows how to spell it.

  • I really do hate comments like this, which are too fatous to be worthy of comment. The fact that he is bandying terms like this, in what I am sure he feels is an ironic, posturing sense is even more irksome, purely because he cannot realise the damage he can do to Morrissey's career - Pete Townsend might get away with being a paedo, but God help him if he was called a fascist, as the music press would have his guts for garters.
Morrissey, for all his faults, and despite endless brickbats from narrow minded, lazy journos has never displayed anything that could be termed fascist. He has made some unguarded comments about aspects of black music, he flew a Union Flag at a Madness gig and he suggested that far right groups should have access to the media, to lower the risk of racial violence. And that's it. The fact that the vast majority of his musical canon is based on the frustrations of repressed sexuality, latent homosexuality and a support for outsiders is hardly the stuff of Skrewdriver or No Remorse.
I would probably dispute his name checking of Mishima too - that some wayward far right types lionise him is one thing, but gay Japanese mystic playwrights, with a yen for the old days and a taste for self destruction cannot figure that large in the looney tunes world of David Duke and Redwatch.
I know that Morrissey is keen on litigation and for once, he would be dead right to get on the phone to his lawyers. I would welcome him dragging this little twat through the courts, if only to teach him a lesson and keep his fat lip buttoned and stop showing off.
