In the MSNBC.com gossip section, there was this little tid bit regarding an affair between Morrissey and Michael Stipe of R.E.M.
"Morrissey has hit out at reports that he had an affair with Michael Stipe, the lead singer of R.E.M. “That’s absolute [bleep], absolute [bleep] and I don’t know why people ever said that, do you?” Morrissey told the Times of London. When asked to address the question of whether he’s gay or straight, he replied, “It’s neither of those things. I’m simply myself, which is inexcusable to many people. I’m not trapped by anything.”"
Well said, I say, well said.

But I'm sure it's just a coincidence that Morrissey is always rumored to be with certain men, yet no such female gossip has ever occured.
He did LIVE with Jake. Jake admitted it in UNCUT.
Morrissey could date men every week for the rest of his life, and he could still claim that he is neither homosexual, nor heterosexual. However, such a claim does not mean that he is interested in being with women, just that he is not willing to label himself as "homosexual." It's a semantics game, and Morrissey is the king of the "What exactly do you mean by 'sexual relations?'" dock strategy.
When he says, "I am merely myself," he is refusing labels, not any kind of narrow sexual interest.

During adolescents and even young adulthood, sexuality can obviously be experimental, escpecialy in those who feel left out of the fray.
So, while people do clearly mingle with different sexes at certain points in their life, sexual idenitity, and sexual experimentation are two different things. Men have sex with other men in prison, yet they almost always return to a strict heterosexual lifestyle upon release. Why? well, because they were not developing an initmate relationship with a man, but a sexual one.
Sexualtiy is often expressed differently in men and women due to hormonal differences, and the cultures that exist within each respective gender. Often men do not develop intimate relationships with each other like women do, so the emotional bond occurs differently, and makes such experimentation less common in heterosexual men than in women. So, yes, it is complex, but that complexity also lends itself to the adoption of specific sexual identities.
By trying to remind everyone that sexuality is a complex, amorphic trait for many people, you are essentially narrowing sexuality to actual sex, instead of to a personal identity. When people are seeking others for not only sexual relations, but in order to build a life with them, gender does play an important role in the selection process for many different reasons.
Personally, I believe that bi-sexuality does not exist as a sexual identity in human beings in any sincere sense. It's commonly the option for people who seek superficial, experimental relationships, or who are desperate for some form of intimacy.
When people seek to settle down, and build a life they do commonly choose a gender and stick to it. Otherwise, it's incredibly difficult to build an identity when jumping from sex to sex based on what selection process? Convenience?
Morrissey knows very well that the moment he declares any specific interest in men, then he will forever be deemed a "gay" artist. However, I've never seen a bi-sexual artist express such obvious sexual interest in men through their music, and leave women so far out of the picture. Don't even mention "Half A Person." Here we have one song that could merely be about an intense friendship bond juxtaposed next to an endless string of camp imagery. The list is incredibly long, and damning.
And yes, discussing a person's sexuality is probably the most important discussion when trying to understand many aspects of their art. To deny this is to be so uneblievably simple-minded that I am shocked that so many of you choose to recite it.
Sexuality is the driving force behind virtually every human endeavor. It's suppossed to be that way in animals like human beings. No amount of intellectualizing can alter that. Take a Biology 101 course if you don't get it.
Morrissey fans have always proven to be very narrow minded people, and the disscussion surrounding Morrissey's sexuality proves that point.
It's astonsihing how many people want to plug their ears when anyone suggests that Morrissey might only be into boys afterall.
So, as it stands, actions speak louder than words.
