Working in the music industry I have access to the midweek charts and can confirm Morrissey held the number 7 position after Mondays sales but has now slipped to number 9. He is 50 copies ahead of Tony Christie so is likely to slip just outside the top 10 by Sunday.

Okay, so we all got a bit of satisfaction from the Quarry singles doing well in the charts, but let's face facts - with the ridiculously small amount of airplay the song has got, it was never gonna be his first number one! Moz songs aren't commercial, that's why they're so special, BECAUSE they are different! As long as his tours sell out in a second, and his albums sell by the bucketload, I'll be one happy camper.

Plus, what was the last decent song to get to the top of the singles chart? I swear to God, I can't remember!

  • It would be great if TYWTML can hold on to position 9 or at least at 10, but if it can't, it can't.

The music press might make a big deal out of this missing the Top 10 with alot of "he's lost his momentum" talk and blah, blah, but the hell with them.

It doesn't change the fact that it's a great song off a great album.

  • It is so true. My younger (step) brother was the most loved. He could do no wrong, even when he stole my father's coin collection to use the money for drugs and even when he screwed me over in business. Now he is on trial for second degree assault - assault on a law enforcement officer - just 13 days after getting a DUI. But even worse, he has terrible taste in music.

Glad to get that off my burly chest...

  • The radio lists are so so very commercialised these days. Anyway, Radio 2 played the single today at around 10 am, which was a great surprise! And they made some great comments too.
Overall, UK radio (especially Radio 1) is very very mainstream. And Very Boring.
    Shame.

  • there are 20/30 world cup songs out this week, also very hot weather in the uk, maybe slightly older mozz fans cant be arsed to go record/cd shopping in this weather, only die-hard fans. maybe not. but the chart position is not the be all and end all, it's nice mozz charts well, and the new single has really great extra tracks, as for the radio 1 issue, i can fully understand mozz's hate to the station, even indie fan jo whiley on monday when saying the new record's in the shops this week are.... no mention of mozz, i listen to the station all day (not through choice) and it has never been played, however radio 2 has played the single many times.

  • "The Youngest Was The Most Loved" would have made a great number one single. That's if Sanctuary would have promoted the release and the song would've gotten quality airplay.

Even the B-sides are much stronger than the "You Have Killed Me" B-sides.

I hope that Morrissey doesn't get too frustrated when future singles from this album ("In The Future When All's Well" and "I Just Want To See The Boy Happy") fall lower in the charts than this one.

  • Nine? NINE?

    And Tony Christie?

What's WRONG with the folk of Britain?!

Ok, so the charts don't mean that much, but doesn't it worry you that they suggest what people like? And yes, it's all very well for some people to say 'it's a matter of taste', but I believe that there is such a thing as BAD taste, and the single-buying public seem to have it.

  • How many people saw Morrissey during his recent UK tour? Even taking into account those who traveled to multiple shows, it still must be many thousands, right? You guys go to concerts but don't buy singles or something?

  • everyone who could possibly want to hear new moz songs has bought the album and therefore have no need to buy the single- the only people who have bought it are the die-hard fans who wanted to hear Ganglord. this is why it has not charted very well.
but who cares, eh. it's lovely outside- go and get a tan, a beer, a burger and lighten up.

  • i'm surprised it's even going to go top 10. MOst of those buying it will be Morrissey obsessives on both formats. Perhaps number 10ish is the lowest a moz single can chart these days.

  • Yet another fantastic collaboration between Morrissey and Tobias. His songs are incredibly catchy (even "On The Streets I Ran" which is lyrically weak) and moving. I'm glad that Moz is writing music with him, and all the other Lads.

Even with so many great songs from Boz and Alain, it's time for Jesse to shine also.
