Morrissey to Give Rare Interview and Performance at SXSW Music

In what could best be described as a once in a lifetime experience, Morrissey will be interviewed by Rolling Stone's David Fricke for a SXSW Interview on Thursday, March 16 at the South By Southwest Festival followed by a performance at Austin Music Hall presented by the BBC Radio.

This will be a rare chance to hear the icon discuss his work and his influences. Additionally, this will be one of the first performances in support of his forthcoming album Ringleader of the Tormentors which will be released on April 4th on Attack/Sanctuary.

Ringleader of the Tormentors was recorded in Rome by Tony Visconti (David Bowie/T Rex) and includes a contribution form legendary film soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone. Ringleader is Morrissey's first studio album since 2004's internationally acclaimed You Are the Quarry, which became the best selling album of his career and debuted on the Billboard charts at #11.

Scroll down and he is listed with a photo also. Is this a 1 gig warm up thing for the tour? Who knows but he's apparently playing. Cheers.

WhyteGrrrl also writes:
While checking out what bands would be playing the South by Southwest Festival, I came across Morrissey's name, as well as a picture. This event pre-dates all the other gigs in the UK as well as Ireland. The festival is in mid-March, and in Texas no less!

Red Lightning will also be playing this event as well as a ton of other great bands.

  • presented by BBC Radio...

Perhaps the interview and performance will be broadcasted.

also interview conducted by Rolling Stone journalist so perhaps Rolling Stone magazine will feature him in an upsoming issue...thus giving him some publicity in the states. although the journalist may simply be a guest of the festival.

the music badge gets you into the whole conference. on the upside, you get to go see moz give an interview. the downside is that you have to pay that much.

you can buy a wristband which gets you into all of the venues in the evening..those cost a little over $100. those usually go on sale at Waterloo records and you actually have to show up and be in line to buy one. they usually go on sale sometime in February, and last year, they actually ran out of wristbands. it used to be that you could actually walk up to a venue and buy one.

if an act is super popular, they let those with badges in first, so if you have a wristband and really want to see something, you really need to show up super early and probably endure some crappy ass band from Beaumont.

and that's the honest truth on that one.

what really P.O.'s me is that a few years ago, i used to volunteer in the panels discussion portion! had things stayed the way they were, i could have been shuttling him off to wherever and made some stupid smalltalk about whether or not he saw any good bands. i had to give it up because of stupid work obligations....not to mention that i'll have to fork out $525 to see the only portion of the conference that i actually care about.

as for the show, i'll be parked somewhere on the concrete in front of wherever he'll play. i'm seeing that one somehow or somewhere.

  • Way to go Texas. After many heartaches and disappointments, you've bagged the earliest tour stop to date.

I see this as a big "F-U" to all the ticket scalpers selling ducketts to the UK shows and getting all this jack because it was supposedly the first of Moz's tour.

That being said, a bit of a warning: If you check Moz's history, at first glance, it doesn't look too good for you Texans. He's notorious for cancelling festivals and on Texas. Ever since that mess of a bootleg errr video Live in Dallas, he seems to have stayed away from the Lone Star State. It's not the Texan's fault, it was the production company. But you know Moz, he'll take down as many fleets as he can and you can be the victim of circumstance.

But it should be all good. Not only would he have to cancel an entire show, he'd also have to cancel an interview. Last time he did that, it was on Craiggers...who happened to be about an eight minute drive from his last crib. I don't think he'd rather make that stressful plane trip back to Italy than to give you what you deserve.

I can see Moz working. He based everything around LA the last time and now he's changing the pace. Good for you Moz. Save us for last. I'm always down to have a tour shirt and tofu sundae at the clearance price of $25.

  • A wrist band doesn't mean that you will get into the show for SxSW, even if you waited several days in line. Members of the press/media/music lables and performing bands have access to all shows first, then those with wristbands are allowed in.

I have been to shows at SxSW where the venue fills up with the press/media/lable executives and other bands just as eager to see a good show and only a few people with wristbands are allowed into the show. Just ask Elijah Wood what happened to him when he waited to see MIA last year!!!

At this stage, he needs them as much, if not more, than they need him. He needs the US press publicity, and he needs the UK radio airplay. He will be there.

  • i know i'm stepping out a limb by making this analysis of it, but i think that most likely, moz will either be at the large stage at Auditorium shores (basically, they mock up an area of town lake like an outdoor music festival, but with one main stage and all of the public is allowed to attend) or if not, at least the Austin Music Hall that holds 3000 people.

    here's why:

they can't publicize morrissey's appearance like that and then procede to piss everyone off by not letting anyone except those who paid $500 see him. it's bad business.

when i think back on it, 99% of the time when there was a show that was so packed that it was "badges only" it was mostly because it was a hot up-and-comer like the Strokes that was put in a venue that turned out to be too small for the demand because nobody could really gauge ahead of time just how much interest there was going to be.

they already know morrissey is going to be a big draw, so he's at least going to be put on one of the largest stages. for example, a few years ago, Patti Smith was promoted in the same way with an interview and such and she played the outdoor stage.

when you compare someone like Morrissey to kris kristofferson, toots and the maytals, los lonely boys, who have all played the outdoor stage, his name is equal or bigger.

  • Us British people are fascinated with America and anyone who denies that might try and think when they last watched a British film or decided they'd turn down a pint with Samuel L Jackson if invited.

I go to America as often as I can afford. Atlanta, Denver, Washington... Of course it has it's shitty side but that's almost as appealing.

The odd thing is, as a tweed wearing uberBrit, I feel very at home in America - we're not that different.

  • The SXSW music festival isn’t for anyone’s experimentation. It’s a titanic music festival that happens regardless of when Morrissey decides to start a new tour or release a new record. It’s silly to suggest a show of this caliber would be anyone’s idea of practicing new material for a European crowd.

“The results of SXSW were rad . . . we’re gonna slay the UK!” – Morrissey.
