An anonymous person writes:
In an interview in this week's Denver weekly, Westword, New Order bass player Peter Hook calls Morrissey a "twat":

...."It's funny," he adds, "I was doing a gig in Leicester last week, and this American guy came up to me. He obviously wasn't a New Order fan and didn't know who I was. He said, 'Hey, man, play some Smiths.' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Why not?' And I said, 'Because I fucking hate Morrissey. He's a twat.' The guy was floored; he literally almost fell over. He's used to DJs saying, 'Sure, man, I'll put it on in a bit.' But you might as well be honest, right?"

  • Why should Hooky play things that he hates!
I used to love telling Swiss tossers to go forth and multiply when they asked for shit.

  • I wouldn't pay very much attention to this comment, I really wouldn't. New Order are on another battlefield.

  • This type of name-calling is really for folks who work with a brain-stem only.

It's one thing to not like another's music, but to use language like "twat" is really just plain childish.

If someone asked me to play something I didn't like- I would probably say "Sorry, can't help you!" or

"I don't care for that artist because..."

I am also not sure of what to make of the whole DJ tour-thing, anyway.

New Order has talent- but you can't compare them to Morrissey or the Smiths. It would be like comparing-
    Kate Bush to Britney Spears

    Lou Reed to Peter Gabriel

    Siouxie to Madonna

    Whitney Houston to Sade

    need I go on?

    Always,

  • Hooky is just a bass player and unless you are a bass player going under any name other than Andy Rourke, Kim Deal or Carlos D your opinion is totally redundant.

Just as an aside, are New Order the most over-rated band ever or would that honour fall to U2 or the Who. It's a close call.

  • I don't care for Peter Hulk's opinion. He's just an unpolite person, the one who thinks he's got compelling arguments other than his bad words. All I have to say is: Andy Rourke is far better than Peter Bollocks. Joy Division is a boring band. Ian Curtis may be a great lyricist but he used to explore only one facet of poetry: Drama. Morrissey achieves the various possibilities poetry may offer in a way that the listener identify to. Bernard Winter is an horrendous singer and liricyst. By the time he was J. Division's guitarrist nobody payed that much attention at him.
Dance music is crap and it is the only thing New Old Order contributed to. The Smiths is undoubtely a Top 5 band of England's rock n roll history.

    • I have to object to the notion that Joy Division is boring. Sure, Ian Curtis only explored drama, but he did it better than just about anyone, ever. He was the master of his domain. You can almost feel his pain when you listen to his music...It's still some of the most powerful music we have. And unlike so many lyricists (Trent Reznor, anyone?), his anguish is real and not designed to get tail. Have you ever listened to Closer from start to finish? It's amazing. I have to just sit there staring into space for a while after I listen to it, just trying to absorb it all.

That said, Peter Hook needs to shut the fuck up.

  • I've read several articles about members of New Order hating the Smiths and Morrisssey in particular. I even suffered through one long interview in German with New Order around the time that Who Put the M in Manchester was released. They spent an entire page trashing Moz. I can't remember the whole thing, but one comment went something to the effect of they loved the title of the DVD because (and I'm trying to translate here) "If Morrissey had even bothered to ask anyone he would know that every single inhabinant of Manchester hates him like the plague" They also went on to say that "quite simply put he is a bastard and not nice to his contemporaries". It's quite obvious that they are jealous of Moz and for some reason find the need to bash him.

  • What a complete wanker! Who is Peter bloody Hook to have a go at good old Steven?

I have always felt a bit uneasy when thinking of the geezers in New Order, and this just makes me even more so. and this despite me loving Joy Division.

But it sounds like plain old jealousy to me, doesn't it? Peter Hook is far from Morrissey when it comes to creating his art, touching people with it and looking tremendous while doing it. And old Hooky knows it, I'm sure

    "Aaahaww. Gruff! Northern! Bliss".

Now, Pete, here's what you could say next time to sound more politically correct; don't say: "Fooooook off! I ain't playing that, he's a fookin' twat!", just say, for instance, "Morrissey is a Vanilla Ice gone wrong, therefore and with all due respect for your opinion, I shall not play his song."

We'll all know what you mean.

  • As much respect as I have for Joy Division and New Order, I hate the way they've always felt the need to slag off their contemporaries; mainly The Smiths and The Cure. But they never give any good reason why, which immediately indicates jealousy. At least when Robert Smith or Moz have a dig at each other, they point to their respective musical styles, or lyrical differences. C'mon Hooky, just because you think Moz is a twat doesn't mean you shouldn't play him. If you're a DJ and his music is within the genre of the night as it's billed, you have to respect the wishes of your clientele. Otherwise you just sound like a petulant child.

  • If you watch the filmed commentary that Peter Hook supplies on the 2-disc DVD of 'Twenty Four Hour Party People' you'll actually here him euoligise The Smiths and make the point that he thinks Tony Wilson made a poor error of judgement in not signing The Smiths.

I think the whole thing is a case of Northern(or Mancunian) pride. Kind of a 'We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful' type of thing.

  • New Order can't hate the Smiths or else Bernard and Johnny would have never been Electronic.
Mr. R. Smith of the Cure has been very negative about Moz too.
And Moz too of many others.
They humans just like you and me who like to talk shite and then say that they are not like that.
And lastly, someone already said that if JD hadn't not existed the Smiths would have not came about.
Let's not forget that NO has outsold Smiths/Moz. Blue Monday was the best selling album of all-time.
