Tularosa Street - Jan. 9 2006 entry:

Ringleader of the Tormentors - seems that there is a difference of opinion out there. If you were to ask me, I would say "it stinks" (in jay sherman/the critic voice) only because I'm beginning to despise Jed Weitzman. He never follows through with anything that's "considered done"! Now it's Jan. and the book I left him in Rome still isn't taken care of! Here's what others think:

It's so amazing. Most of the songs are incredible, my favorites were:
"I Will See You in Far Off Places" it sounds Middle Eastern and very heavy.
"Dear God Please Help Me" has beautiful strings by Ennio Morricone, "Life is a Pigsty" is a 7 and half minute epic.
"At Last I Am Born" reminds me of "Frankly Mr. Shankly" and has awesome talking bits as well as the children's choir... "The Youngest was the Most Loved" had the choir too.
5 different songs have a version of the word "kill" in the lyrics.
I took extensive notes so I could plagiarize lyrics for the next few months...
The record was supposed to come out on my birthday, but I think they pushed the date back.

i was so ready not to hate. i was super pumped will hooked it up and got me into the thing. i was all happy and riding my bike there thinking 'there's no way this will be worse than maladjusted or you are the quarry' sure i expect some duds but i also expect some jams right? zero! i walked in during the middle of the record, which was actually the best part of it. the single sucks kinda. there are some laughable lyrics too. not in the usual laughable way, i mean bad laughable.the deal is now he's psyched and not emo at all. he want to live forever now and eat grapes in rome. i shit you not. in the release he's all, 'i don't give a shit about endearing myself to the public.' obviously not! not to say i won't listen to this album when it comes out. i've changed my mind before. but if i got all pitchfork-wise i'd give it a 6.2?there was a break when the recorded ended and the dude went to que it up again, and i go 'fuckit just put on vauxhall and we'll all be happier!' then i realized i was the only one in the room.

  • First off he writes at the top this is for my friends, "not Morrissey fans" Next he has posted all these pictures of cool hip indie kids hanging out in bars being "crazy" with all of these "cool" girls posing and trying hard to look hot and look they are trying hard not to look hot.. This is the kind of self-indulgent, pathetic, "I am cool guy" posting that really shows people how loney you are. You want to be valedated - fine. Now go find a girlfriend/boyfriend, move out of your parent's basement, and drinking all of that cheap Italian beer....

    • Bingo!

"I'm like, embarrassed by my love for Morrissey, a condition borne out of overwhelming insecurity and self-loathing. Therefore, I will trash Morrissey in an effort to appear cool and detatched. I won't be successful, of course, but at least I can get my name out there by being a total douchebag. I will post pictures on my blog that only highlight my status as a self-important poseur. Maybe, one sweet day, a girl will be impressed by my 'objectivity' and I'll finally lose my cherry.

Or maybe I'm just an asshole."

    Dear Parent / Guardian.

It has come to my attention that there are some aspects of your child's English that need vast improvement. In the short extract I have chosen, from some recent work, I have highlighted some points for your attention.

Point 1 - Beginning a sentence with a lower case letter.

Point 2 - He / she talks like one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Point 3 - The use of random question marks.

    Point 4 - Spelling

Point 5 - Trying to spoil the fun for every Morrissey fan excited about the new album.

I suggest your 'emo kid' returns to another preview session of Ringleader Of The Tormentors and this time attempts to write a literate piece, with legitimate reasons why he / she dislikes the album, as opposed to 'Ooh I hate it when Morrissey sounds a bit optimistic'.
Failing this, they can kindly bugger off back to their bedroom to listen to Evanesence.

  • This guy has practically no life and wastes what little of it he has by posting boring meaningless pictures of his boring meaningless life and writes boring meaningless drivel about boring meaningless things that no one in their right mind could ever possibly be interested in and most of that can't even be understood because he has no writing abilities or intellect.

  • This is what I have been saying all along. First, I'm in Morrissey's corner hoping that this album is spectacular and gives him the recognition he deserves. However, like I said from my previous post, I don't think it will. I know without a doubt most of Morrissey's fans will love this album. I know I will, because I love his voice and anything he releases I know I will enjoy. However, here we have the first negative review. Maybe this guy is full of crap, maybe he isn't. But the bottom line is that as long as he keeps this band I don't think he will ever produce music like in The Smiths days. He needs a real band to play real good music. Since the launch of his solo career his weakness has been his band. Sure, he does have some good tunes, but for the most part many of the songs are weak musically. What made The Smiths great was the fact that most of the songs you can turn off the vocals and the instrumental part is still great to listen too. There aren’t many solo songs that you can do that too. He needs a great band to go with his great voice, example The Smiths. Morrissey has settled for this band from the start. He should have fired all the band members’ years ago. This is why I can say with a certainty that this album won’t be received warmly by the general public.

For the record, I am not talking crap about Morrissey, just giving my opinion.

Ok, I put on my bullet proof vest, have at it.
    RABMOZZER -- Tuesday January 10 2006, @01:13PM (#191479)

  • Morrissey has long needed a new band. 'Vauxhall' was superb, but it is beginning to look like more of a fluke for his band as each record goes by. Jesse Tobias may deliver the goods, but probably not. He has hardly done anything illustrious in previous bands, and his work live was competent but unspectacular. I believe Morrissey's voice will soar on this album, but I'm not so sure his band will. If you enlarge the above picture, you will see that this guy has made notes about each song, some of which are dubbed "good" or "decent", which indicates that he wasn't going to pan every song automatically.

    On the other hand.....

he does seem to be the kind of detestable "trendy" person who should be bludgeoned in his bed, from the eminently "indie but wealthy" photos of he and his friends. Additionally, he makes a strange comment at the start where he says he is inclined to say that ROTT stinks "mainly because of Jed Weitzman", which did seem rather odd. I can tell I would dislike him personally - I suspect he is up his own arse and thinks he's cool with his trendy pals. Nevertheless, as Rabmozzer says, it would not be the first time (indeed, it would be the fourth in a row) that Morrissey's band have been shown to be short of inspiration.

  • only because I'm beginning to despise Jed Weitzman".

What a weird, weird thing to say.

    Very odd.

If this man does have a book published, may it be savaged by the critics. I would find that most amusing!

  • Why do I feel like 50% of people here actually don't like Morrissey? These 50% are already criticising an album that hasn't been released yet and a guitarist we've heard nothing from. Ridiculous.

  • Trying to read that article/story/post makes me ill. This guy can't be serious and if he is he certainly has no idea what he is talking about or trying to get a rise out of people. Don't listen to him for a second--this album is going to be unbelievable--i know it, i can feel it, and it seems to be the general consensus of opinion from people who know what they are talking about.

I just wish I could listen to it!!!!!!!!!!

  • if you look at the 'scan' of the track listing with his notes on it, you'll notice the typed text is superimposed on the image in a weird way. it was photoshopped in if you ask me. he faked the paper to make it look like he got it from a listenning party. if he faked that i would guess he didn't go to a morrissey listenning party.

  • Replying to the message two messages up, I am a student graphic designer and very much back up your point. When text is scanned, the usual outcome if not perfect quality, is an obvious bluriness, however here, the text has instead been thinned, just as it does on Photoshop, because Photoshop is very well known for having text issues, and InDesign is supposed to be used on top of an image for the quality to be perfect. The "sketches and rough writing" could have been done with a brush in photoshop too. Look at the last "z" of the "zzzz" part which he has "written"... The top right corner has an almost rounded edge, as if it has been hard to write, and the only outcome from this is that it has been done with a mouse. The written text and sketched also seem to have the same "stroke width" throughout, another big sign.

This is a fake guys and gals, calm it :)

the lyrics may well be not great. many of us have reservations about the titles. they seem devoid of the trademark humour and pathos. I mean 'you have killed me'. come on Moz. you must be able to do better! 'good looking man about town' would be more like it!

  • He says he walked in in the middle of the record, so how does he review the beginning of it? Just curious. Although I refuse to trust the opinion of anyone who proclaims "This song jams". I am a DJ and I would never use such a lame expression. Not that my being a DJ means anything, I'm just saying. Charles

  • This guy hates on Malajusted and Quarry. Now where I can see some of the criticisms in Quarry as an album (although live, the tracks were ten times better, like a higher key and less extreme imitation of Kill Uncle really), Malajusted was a fantastic album. Alma Matters as one of his best and most catchy singles went hand in hand with the fact the album included some wonderful singing moments, his voice having massively improved since Southpaw Grammar. Also, one of my top 5 Mozza songs of all time was a Malajusted B side, "Lost", a simply wonderous creation and easily a Morrissey classic. This all makes me think that he isn't worth thinking about.. Quarry was a success and both are loved by the fan base, he's at an odd's end on this one.

  • The guy's notes are hilarious - that's the way I felt listening to Quarry for the first time: some tracks are great sure, but there are a lot of duds. As big as a Moz fan that I am, I'm fully expecting several duds on Ringleader as well.

The writer is obviously young, trendy, hip, etc...but I think it's refreshing to hear that voice critique Moz's new stuff....there seems to be more objectivity coming through.
