Once in a while, I'll go and check out the different websites used to catalog songs for royalty purposes and, to my surprise, found out that "Something to Shout About" on Johnny's Boomslang album was written by Morrissey and Marr! Not much more detail except that it's tagged with the Harry Fox Agency (HFA) number U03161.

          I'll be the resident sucker.
The song is indeed registered as such on HFA.
The cd sleeve notes however make no mention of Morrissey for "Something to shout about" or anything else.

As per the lyrics, Marr himself said they were created after a walk in the Arizona Mountains (oh boy !).

I guess we have another question for Julia's Q&A.

            • you mean ... you got Morrissey's "greatest hits" on one CD only?

Methinks you discovered a new mp3 compression technique !

    Who cares?

Who can see behind the laughter?
    Who needs me?

    I'm all new
    Kinda know it somehow
    Whirling around
Is just about all I want to do
All I need is the early morning
    It's here for me
    Pity I'm still asleep
    Yes I know
    And you can see
    I always wanted
    I don't know, I don't care
    Maybe I'll see you somewhere
    Something to shout about
    Something to smile about
    It's true, it's all that I know
    New squares across the skyline
    New air, it's hot outside
    Just a passing show
The cars go and fly by
    Already there
    All that I know
Some things you've got to cry about
Some things you've got to smile about
    It's true, it's all I know
    It's all I know "

Hmm... I doubt that's Moz very much.

  • I got Boomslang back in 2003, I believe that was the year, when it came out. The album demonstrates that Marr con't to be a Guitar-Newton/DaVinci/Einstein master. Boomslang was and con't to be very underated. I'm not surprised that there's an unreleased Smiths track on it. The album carries a Smiths undertone to it. It reminds me alot of late 80s and early 90s Britpop bands like Oasis, Happy Mondays and The Verve. The album is truly UNDER-RATED.

  • I'm pretty sure it only means that he wrote the rough idea for the guitar line and scrapped it because he had so many better ideas. Now that he doesn't, he went back and used his own guitar lines and melodies. To be Smiths era does not mean Morrissey was involved. I'm sure there are several Smiths era instrumentals that are sitting on a 4 track tape in his basement. Probably for a reason. (Still, I'd buy the Cd release of them.)

  • It's a pity Marr has let his ego get in the way of knowing his limitations isn't it?

You wouldn't see Morrissey picking up a guitar on stage and strumming a couple of chords deluding himself he can play it. He leaves that to Robbie Williams.
