Steve Berry writes:
Avril Angers, "forces sweetheart who endured as a versatile stage actress", and cover star of The Smiths' "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish", has died, aged 87.

The shot on the cover of "I Started Something..." is taken from the film The Family Way (also starring Hayley Mills and Hywel Bennett). Morrissey was once (mis)quoted as naming "Avril Angus" as his favourite actress (although this tended to change from interview to interview anyway, didn't it?).

  • Ms. Angers had incredible range as an actress / performer. She made her mark in every medium: radio, theatre, TV, & film. She was equally gifted in playing both comedy and drama and her brilliance often lay in combining these two elements simultaneously (like Morrissey). She was a talented singer and dancer. She often wrote her own stage material. Along with the young Elvis (Shoplifters) this is my favorite Smiths cover (I started something)…and as I look at the poster on my wall…Avril “I hope you’re singing now.”

  • I really liked it. I think its such a beautiful picture of her looking some elderly but cute, in a sence. Made my day once when I was watching an episode of "Are you being Served" and I saw her in it.

  • Does anyone know how Morrissey discovered her and at what point or circumstance in his life? It seems he has(d) a "penchant" for comedians and female singers, but I don't know how that came in in his life. It would be an interesting biographical note - at least it is my feeling.

  • Despite the fact that I really knew litle of Avril, I am saddenned. I remember her mostly from repeats of "Are You Being Served?" and because of this (and the cover for "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish")I always wanted to see more of her work.
