Andy Rourke DJ Tour

From: Free Times (Ohio)

Soundcheck : Andy Rourke : Smiths Bassist

WHEN THE SMITHS EMERGED from Manchester, England in the early 1980s, they immediately became an underground sensation. Singer Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, drummer Mike Joyce and bassist Andy Rourke blazed an alternative music trail that has led the way for many subsequent acts. Eighteen years after their breakup, bassist Andy Rourke has decided to embark on a DJ tour, spinning his favorite tunes to adoring audiences that never got to see the Smiths in a live setting. Rourke recently spoke to us via phone from his Manchester home.

  • That third song that he can't remember is "What Difference Does It Make?". I think the studio he's talking about is Drone Studios where the Smiths recorded their demo for EMI.

  • Andy Rourke doesn't like You Are The Quarry. Maybe because he's so washed up he'll be spitting water till the day he dies.

  • "...Andy Rourke has decided to embark on a DJ tour, spinning his favorite tunes to adoring audiences that never got to see the Smiths in a live setting..."
and this is a substitute, listening to him spin The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Interpol?

"...I went down and Morrissey was kind of there..."
kind of? He was in the doorway perhaps, or crawling through a window?

"...I think Morrissey’s work has kind of gotten worse though since then, which is unfortunate..."
His bass playing is so improved though. Look how everyone is so eager to have him play with them.

  • An event such as this deserves a critique or some form of comment by way of response. And my point of contention is with regard to his comment regarding the use of 'fillers' on the last album. My god, that's why he's a DJ spinning lust for life. Sad, but true.

  • I think its great that Andy is doing what he really digs doing. Whatever way you want to look at it, he is still playing music!
I have seen him play live with The Smiths and also with Sinead O'Conner during her first solo tour in Boston. And he is still, without a dought one of the best players in the buisness. I have never seen him play sloppy. He also plays in a punchy style that makes him very unique in many ways. I may be going out on a limb by saying this but, "Morrissey has played with a handfull of drummers since his solo career began, but none of them were as good as Andy Rourke. I still think that The Smiths will play again someday. Someday.....

  • "You get a quite young crowd. Lots of people who never got to see play the Smiths live, so I suppose it’s the next best thing, really."

How deluded can you get? Yes, I'm sure many people go along to see him DJ because it's the next best thing to seeing the Smiths.

"Hmm, not sure what to do tonight. Should I go along to see Morrissey sing "There is a light" or should I go along to see Andy Rourke playing some records? Which is the next best thing to The Smiths. I really don't know.."

  • So, Andy doesn't like Morrissey's recent stuff, which of course brings out a legion of disgruntled fans calling for everything short of his murder. How juvenile.

Maybe some of you shoud spend more time cirticizing Morrissey's ridiculous actions, and comments, and not someone who says something so incredibly passive as "I don't like Morrissey's new stuff." Talk about being a sycophant. Obviously shame is a foreign concept on here.

Many of you remind me of conservative bloggers, or relgious fanatics who revert to the mindset of a 15 year old the minute somoene disagrees with anything that Morrissey says or does.

Hell, retarded children don't receive as much defense.

  • June 1985 Hollywood Palladium. Walking straight to the front seeing the glow of the Trace Elliott
Black Light in the Dark. Suddenly The Smiths appear and that Immaculate tone of the Bass, the Punk urgency in all the songs. Why Morrissey,Marr,Rourke,Joyce thats why. A band is more than the sum of it's parts. If only all of them could ditch their resentments against each other see how beautiful it was and be thankful that it was at all. If only the Ego's could be put aside. Glad I was there !
And cheers to all the members of the Morrissey band over the last 15 years their work is also exemplarary and is the standard Bar of great Pop writing and musicianship.

  • ...is going to a Morrissey show. Seeing Andy as a DJ isn't really an experience, I imagine.

  • I'd rather go to see real djs like Jimmy Saville or DLT.

When Rourke comes up with something as good as snooker on the radio, I'll start listening.

P.S Not allowed to use capital letters for dj !!!
    Pathetic.
