  • A few years ago, in one of those Karaokes made for clowning 1980 celebrities (does such thing abound in England too?), I went up stage to sing "Sweet Dreams", dressed all in black. My clowning flunked and I sang it as seriously as I could. She is just too cool to be clowned, and I feel a pang of pleasure to know she made a Smith's cover. I would just love to hear how it sounds like. Twenty years from now, I will have the secret pleasure of seeing someone, perhaps, in a Bozo moment of their lives bowing to "Last Night I Dreamt" interpreted by a certain wonderfully androgenous Annie Lennox. Now, I am just waiting for Laurie Anderson to do her share. A hopeless yet eager Suggestion sent to her: "November Spawned a Monster" or (yes!) "Jack the Ripper".

  • Actually.. (Score:1, Informative)

Actually the existance of the cover has been known for quite a long time - it was supposed to be part of a covers project taht would come out after "savage" but never actually made it. There is a small part of it - from the titles of a music show on tv - that is around in mp3 form - i got it at least and have given it to some lists

  • When Eurythmics released 'Sweet Dreams' in the 1983 I went out and bought it straight away, and played it for days on end. I adored Annie at that particularly point. She was edgy and famously androgynous; with that carrot crop, alabaster complexion, dressed in made to measure suits from Saville Row. She and Dave were hip, cool and totally refreshing.

THEN, came the second album. Forgettable, mediocre, middle of the road drivel with that diluted soul r&b sound, which was the dreaded dirge they went on to regurgitate throughout the 80's.

I never bought that album or any other future album of the Eurythmics after that. Somewhere in the mid 80's they quickly became the soundtrack of jumped up pretentious YUPPIE philistines. You know the type:

"...ooooh yahh Annabel, Tarquin & Tilly are coming around... and we'll be serving tiger prawn jambalaya and spiced rice on those cool square shaped plates from Habitat...of course we'll be playing Eurythmics...what else could we possibly listen to?"

    Well jolly hockeysticks!

NOTE: The Smiths were at the zenith of their ginormous pop career at this point.

Even that actress who can't sing, keep her clothes or pole dance properly Dem-MAY Moore never failed to mention them in interview.

One could really understand why the brilliant Julie Burchill once wrote that she wished (her sweetest dream) that Annie Lennox would die painlessly in a plane crash.

Unlike Ms Burchill or Mr. Morrissey I have never expressed a death wish on anyone in my entire life.

Yet sometimes I can understand why such feelings are epressed in a public forum now and again.

    Are Annie&Dave covering:
'Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me'
just to give them the desperately needed credibility they NEVER had for much of the 80's or the 90's?

Me thinks so. And how cynical of them to choose that song - knowing that the huge Smiths tranatlantic fanbase are going to rush out and buy it just to hear what Annie does with it.

There is no denying Annie has a gorgeous voice and probably one of the best in the business.

It's just that she's been singing the wrong songs for the past 20 years.

  • Annie Lennox is so dated she gone through some kind of time machine and become an Edwardian seamstress. So much potential but she's just become someone's embarrassing scottish auntie.

Dave Stewart is just a cock. Have you ever seen the film he directed? The most appalling piece of vanity direction possible.

    what a cringe.
