Today is the 50th anniversary of James Dean's death. Very 'Suedehead'. I already listened to it today as a memorial. He would have been 74!
---Belligerent Ghoul also writes: Fantastic article on James Dean, Morrissey mentioned:
Jimmy Dean, rock on - theage.com.au Was Dean the first teenager, or the first pop star, as Barney Hoskyns suggests. Morrissey of the The Smiths has written a book about him: Bob Dylan made a pilgrimage to Fairmount, Indiana, where Dean grew up. His name has been invoked, in song, by everyone from Madonna to Michelle Shocked, David Essex to the Eagles, Don McLean to Daniel Bedingfield...The band Green Day have acknowledged him as an inspiration for their song Boulevard of Broken Dreams...

James Dean & Morrissey... (Score:1, Interesting)
The doc was titled "James Dean Remembered" (1974). I'd seen it on TV years ago, but it's included as a bonus feature on the recently released 'Rebel w/o a Cause" special edition DVD. It contains a clip from an early TV drama in which Dean plays a "psychotic convict" who at one point says, "My only weakness was... nevermind." Sound familiar? He then proceeds to rip open his shirt in a very Mozlike fashion!
It's well documented that some of Moz's lyrics are quotes or plays off of movie or book dialogue, but I'd never read about this one. It's doubtful that Moz would've had access to the entire 50s TV show at the time "Shoplifters" was written, but he'd certainly seen this documentary (which by the way, includes interviews with Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood before their untimely deaths and is quite good in general)!

Concerning the late great James Dean, I can't imagine what he would look like at 74! It is just as well...
