This is directly from the BBC Radio 2 website advertising the programme. We’re mostly dependent on other sources here for our news. It is no fault of mine, not of Danbutt or S J Banks, authors of the earlier stories, if the promises weren’t born out – unless we’re all half-asleep! Shit happens; let’s just move on. By the way, I don’t recall hearing Paul McCartney either: anyone?
Good night.
"Johnny Depp on James Dean
Tuesday 27 September @ 8.30-9.30pm
James Dean is the eternal youthful rebel - the movie idol blessed with the looks, style, talent and attitude that captivated a generation. To mark the 50th anniversary of his death at the wheel of his Porsche on September 30 1955, Johnny Depp presents this profile of one of Hollywood's most popular icons. Although he died before Elvis had his first hit, Dean's rebellious image has always been associated with rock 'n' roll and he was idolised by musicians like Presley, Bob Dylan and John Lennon, who is quoted as saying "without James Dean, the Beatles would never have existed." Johnny Depp highlights the artistic passion that drove this country boy from rural Indiana, to become a 20th century icon. He starred in only three movies but when he died, aged just 24, his sensitive, violent, moody and tormented portrayal of rebellious youth had inspired a generation of disaffected teenagers. The programme features interviews with fans including Morrissey, David Puttnam, David Bailey, Dennis Hopper, Martin Landau, Bill Wyman and Sir Paul McCartney."

one for 'feedback' i think. i've never complained before (honest) but naming contributors is a deliberate way of getting extra listeners - i never touch radio2 - and i told several people to listen on the basis of the (good faith) post here which was based on the bbc website.
still, nice to hear dear old david jacobs (of juke box jury) schmoozing in after the dean doc ended.

But James Dean as a (counter) cultural persona was far more interesting than his movies.
"Giant", I recall, was a very, very long soap drama starring a bunch of queens hamming it up like there's no tomorrow (Rock Hudson, Dean, Liz Taylor, etc).

Many people are better placed to comment on his life and on his work but it was nice to listen to a brief interview with Natalie Wood who also suffered a very tragic early death. And comments from his friend Eartha Kitt who told him that his porsche car was spooked and that it was going to kill him. Another from (Alex Guiness?) along similar lines.

Other than that, it would have been a better television documentary. There should have been visuals to go along with it.
Johnny Depp sounded oh so very boring on there. He is an excellent actor, but not a good narrator.

Conclusions from CH5 TV show (UK) (Score:0)
In addition, the program had interviews with people who were involved in the accident, namely policemen on the scene (1 witness) and another witness who had been driving very close behind Donald Turnupseed and watched the entire accident scene unfold from start to finish.
The program showed a computerised reconstruction of the crash scene, using modern and accurate computer predications and image analysis software, looking at photographs taken from the crash scene and of the road markings - tyre skid marks.
For anyone interested, the program proved (by scientific means) and quite conclusively that:
1) Dean was not travelling as quickly as the rumours would have you believe - on investigation his car was travelling between 70 and 75mph.
2) Donald Turnupseed was travelling between 60 and 65mph.
3) Dean's car could clearly be seen a significant distance away on that road. There was a dip in the road, but on investigation this dip was not sufficient enough to stop another driver seeing Dean's car and seing the car from several hundred metres away.
4) Donald Turnupseed clearly caused the accident, without a shadow of doubt, and also contradicting with the common view (and original trial outcome) that blamed Dean.
5) On investigation, looking at the markings from Turnupseeds tyres, it actually looked like he was not looking at the road infront of him (with Dean's car on it) when he turned.
6) Dean was driving the car. Dean was badly injured in the crash due to the weight of Turnupseeds car and because the aluminium Porsche was much smaller (in height terms) and also very much lighter, much lighter, causing significant damage.
7) Both drivers were speeding, but not by much, and certainly not as much had been expressed at the original trial - at which time Dean had been blamed for the crash and for speeding in the region of 93 mph (based on a flawed estimatation of speed versus distance it would now appear)
8) Dean was braking very hard when his Porsche crashed- some 20 yards and more from the tyre skid marks it would seem.
Apologies for the poor spelling and typing but I wanted to get this down quickly just incase anyone was interested.
