I went to see the Brian Jonestown Massacre play yesterday night at El Salon, in Montreal. At one point, the singer Anton Newcombe praised local band the High Dials, before expressing his opinion for other locals The Dears with the words: "Murray (Lightburn, leader of the Dears) sucks". The band's guitarist then claimed that he had the same birthdate as Morrissey, and that "everytime Murray Lightburn sucks Morrissey's dick, he's sucking mine". Which, obviously, makes total sense.

It's really sad when a band starts reeling off bitter remarks just because another (undoubtedly more talented, or at least with a better choice of name) band from their town becomes famous. It would be nice if they could just be happy with them. Bringing telepathic fellatio in to it isn't helping anyone.

If they were just nice then they may have been given a couple of breaks by The Dears, as The Killers did for The Bravery. Wait until after you're famous to start slagging people off though. Ugh, the bravery.

  • Have you seen that film "Dig" about the friendship/ rivalry between the Brian Jonestown Massacre (namely Anton) and the Dandy Warhols? It had a European release last a month or two ago.

Anton comes across as a total mentalist who really doesn't have a firm grip on reality.
A lot of the documentary style film was him getting in to fights, gibbing out on smack and generally being more than a bit peculiar.

Good music though, I have a couple of their albums and they're really great.

  • Because I find a comment like that totally refreshing however homophobic and insensitive it is. I mean, my belly is just stuffed with all the wannabes namechecking Moz...this is just a nice expresso to help me digest.

Why dont Fred Durst and Hilary Duff just piss off cause everytime Tom Cruise sucks Lenny Kravitz off, he sucks me off too!!!

  • At the Edmonton show he was talking about masturbating, and then he said something like "you know, when I was your age, there was no such thing as porn on DVD or VHS (???)! We only had magazines. And, sometimes the crotch on the picture would get all worn out!" and everyone was pretty much completely grossed out by that. And then he said "Yeah, well... all your sisters..... are my.... cousins..." I don't know exactly what he meant by that, but I could not stop laughing!

.*.* I can smile about it now but at the time it was terrible *.*.
  • his comments are very outdated as the Dears seem to have gone way of Echobelly and the Primatives in regards to Morrissey's whimsy. I'm just waiting for Nancy Sinatra to get tossed on the heap with Sandie Shaw and Viv Nicholson.

I'm almost sure you can do better than that.
  • I saw the BJM with both The Dears and The High Dials last year at Maxwell's in NJ so it's most definitely a personal jibe based on something that happened in reality. That being said, Anton is a total loon and his grap on reality can be feeble.

  • he may hav juste been joking around. he might not hav meant any of it and was simply tryin to rile up the hometown proud crowd.

someone mentioned that BJM and The Dears hav played shows together before and so maybe somethin happened there that created hard feelings. well, maybe they really got along. imean, the fact that they played shows together and got to talkin is presumably how Anton got to know how big a Moz fan Murray is (as im sure he doesnt frequent morrissey-solo to find that out). maybe as he was tryin to get the crowds back up, he was simultaneously taking a friendly jab at a former tourmate. im sure many here hav been the butt of many jokes made by friends who like to hav a little fun with the Morrissey obsession. iknow ihav.

its often the tendency around here to assume the worst, but maybe Anton was juste havin a little fun.

  • Can I just say, as a Montrealer who has seen both The Dears, on a number of occasions, and the High Dials (New Year's, like 2003, Le Swimming) live, that the High Dials do not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as The Dears.

And that obviously, BJM are the sort of stupid, bullshit, damaged, deranged, slacker, loser, American band that just doesn't play outside the bullshit, damaged, deranged, slacker, loser United States. When you see "Dig" you think: how could anyone sensible and nice, with a good record collection and a desire to make the world a cooler place, care about either of the two maniacal, myopic, self-aggrandizing, but obviously sub-standard and derivative, bands involved?

There's a reason people like bands from Toronto and Montreal. It's because they're produced by a society not entirely ruined, such as our American neighbours. Socialism works: check it out.

But that's nothing to do with the High Dials. They suffer from nothing more than this: good, old-fashioned mediocrity.
