Morrissey's 'Live at Earl's Court' album was given a 7 out of 10 review by the NME this week. The title of the article was 'This Charming Elder Statesman', and the wry and surprisingly affectionate piece concluded that Morrissey had 'lost none of his potency'.

In the April issue of NME ( pg 49) there's a review for "Live at Earl's Court"( by Rob Fitzpatrick).

Just a few sentences from that article:

"A new live CD proves that the Mozfather is just as potent as he ever was"
"An alluring performer at 45 as he was at 23".
"Right at the very end of this CD an over-emotional Morrissey howls "Don't forget me ! I love you"
"Thank you for coming" he says, like a parking attendant on a particularly tubercular morning."Thank you for being you".

Hello everybody! I know that I'll be ripped by many of you for writing this. But I'm here because I love Morrissey and I am a fan. I sing in a band. If anybody wants to have a look at my web site, listen to our music and make any kind of critic, that would be really appreciated. It's important for me because you are a real "public" and your judgement would mean something. Thank you and please don't kill me!

Fuck it, Dude. Let's go bowling.
  • Has Morrissey had his wish of fate come true?
"Oh, I don't want to be judged anymore, I don't want to be judged. I would sooner be loved, I would sooner be just blindly loved?"

Mutual satisfaction then, as we anticipate what else might follow in 2005's embrace of genuine recognition.

  • Obviously it appears on the Earls Court CD so I could be wrong, but i was at the Earls Court gig and i swear on (whoever's grave you would like to insert) that Morrissey said 'Please...dont FORGIVE me' at the end not 'don't FORGET me'. I remembered it as it was quite a potent thing to say, then again i was bending over to pick up my drink and coat so i could have misheard. Unless they have taken the line from the Manchester gig and stuck it on the end. Not uncommon, even the Beatles stuck clapping on to the end of Get Back on Let it Be to make it sound like a live recording - had me fooled for 20 odd years.
Plus..all these rave reviews of the concert CD, you know you will only listen to it once, though at least the DVD has a good proportion of good solo songs and not as many duff b-sides and smiths songs (great as they are, but having to get 2 guitarists + a keyboard player to replicate one mans guitar part is just weak - to say the least) he has such a great solo back catalogue, but for me the Earls Court gig didn't exploit this.

  • I'm going to be an emotional wreck next week... Just listening to Moz's exquisite mellow tones on the single leaves me in no doubt about that.
Come on... we must get this single to the top, where it deserves to be!!! I'm going out to buy another copy today. Hearing the crowd in the background, of which I was part, singing the immortal words of TIALTNGO to Moz, and meaning every word, leaves me tingling with pride and passion. The DVD with all the between-song quips is just going to blow my mind.

By the way, does anyone else think that Moz's "Thank you" at the end of the single sounds like Tommy Cooper? It makes me laugh!

  • NME is dogshit. 7/10 for Moz performing the picks of his catalogue, solo and otherwise, live? They gave 50 Cent's new album 9/10, and when I listened to that (don't ask why) it was like frying my knackers in sump oil.

  • Have just picked up a sneeky advance copy from my friendly independant record store and all in all is good but also feel a tad disapointed. Nice pic's in the foldout sleeve (The kilts shot, one of the audience where I can see me :) one with Moz backstage doing a Max Bygraves impression and one with him in a checked blazer with the boys in Jobriath t-shirts). Straight into HSIN, no "why do you come here" or "I'm in Earls Court...why am I smiling" and has only a smidgen of the banter which made it all so special. Bigmouth on the night was amazing, with Boz steaming into his acoustic guitar whereas here it's been almost buried in the mix. The rest is ok and as a live album is enjoyable but to me has suffered from over zealous mixing and sounds quite flat in places. My copy will still be worn out by the end of the month as I had a fantastic night and was the first time I managed to get to the front & ride the barrier and also got to touch the hand of The Moz ! ! !
