Supposedly, the next Moz single will be "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" in two parts- CD1 and CD2 from the "Live At Earl's Court" album. Amazon.co.uk are already taking preorders.

  • Crikey, this is pretty big news.

    The first things that come to mind are;

    - Morrissey choosing to release There Is A Light as the live single over any of his solo work can be chewed upon and debated for so many reasons.

    - It's his salute to the fans as well as what the Smith's achieved, I think. He knows the fans love it, HE loves it, so regardless of high court spats, it's re-released at the expense of Sunday or even November. A quality move.

    - What will the B-sides be? 2 issues would suggest 4 extra tracks, but they can't be from the live album because that would devalue it, so.... other live stuff that didn't make it?

    - Suggest to Moz in 1994, or whenever, that he'd re-release a Smiths song as a single and he'd either have laughed you out of town or thrown you in a canal.

    - Could this chart higher than any Smiths single?

    - Hooray!
  • This is not a serious attempt on the charts. It's probably a limited release in order to give the radio stations something to play in order to promote the live CD and DVD.

  • . . . and the best news in a long time. Perhaps it will even get to number one! I think that the lyrics to that song are the most moving words ever to have been written . . . Oh, well - I'll just have to brace myself to cry in public quite often when it comes on the radio. (I'm not joking . . . that's what happens to me). Tonight I am happy.

  • by releasing a Smiths original as the single, this would mean that Marr, Rourke and Joyce would be making money off it as they will off the album and dvd due to roughly 1/4's worth Smiths content. the royalties for the album and dvd are of course unavoidable if they wanted to release a live compilation of a complete 2004 show as every set had Smiths content in it, but choosing a Smiths track as the single seems to put more money uneccessarily into his former bandmates pockets. ifind that very interesting.

the release of the new live single, album and dvd will mark the first time Morrissey has officially released Smiths material since the 1996 court case. Morrissey of course has released Smiths material earlier on in his solo career [live versions of "London" and "Sweet And Tender Hooligan"], but those songs were released under the old 40/40/10/10 scheme. iwonder if it pains Morrissey to now be furhter lining Mike Joyce's wallet...

  • I am delighted at the thought of a live version of this song being released as a single. I hope that the artwork, however, is of a higher standard than it has been of late. A cover star would be nice but very unlikely. As for retiring, it must be obvious that the great man's career (at least as a pop star) is drawing to an end. The biography would seem to confirm this. One last valedictory album perhaps. I'm sure Moz does not want to 'go on and on' like the dreaded Margaret. He, more than any one, will not want to end up like the OAP Rolling Stones - get off the stage! Let's hope there's a few novels or film scripts in him. He's found his place in the sun and we should be happy for him. He deserves it.

'There Is A Light...' is my favourite song of all time......in its original incarnation. The live version played by Boz and the band I felt in no way lived up to the original - it was weighted down by the workmanlike nature of the playing. I'm talking here specifically of the Birmingham and Earl's Court gigs, where I felt it was leaden. The huge cheer it elicited was less because it was played brilliantly than because it was 'There Is A Light'. 'Bigmouth' was played stupendously well, as was 'How Soon' and 'The More You Ignore Me', but 'Light' was the least inspiring performance of that night to these ears. So i'm not sure how I feel about this.

As to Morrissey retiring - it seems that this story is old, but it goes on. There is an album due in late 2005/early 2006 for certain - Morrissey has said as much, and it's on the "upcoming release calendar" at metacritic, who get their info from the record company. I don't see him retiring - he has much to offer as a studio artist, rather like Cohen and Dylan. I think he WILL scale down the touring aspect but continue to release albums, and that's ok by me.

  • maybe this is being released as a single because the performance itself, as I remember it, was very moving. Isn't this the one that brought Morrissey near to tears as the audience carried on singing the chorus? And didn't he actually do it twice in the same night (I think this was the second night at Earl's Court)?

im playing easy to get / home is a question mark / noise is the best revenge etc etc.

there is a light is a great track but really needs to be left in the past. most of us will own the single release from 1992 (wea) and with it being on the queen is dead and the singles, best of , very best of, we should cherish it as a live gem only. not a new single.

i cant imagine it getting a-list airplay or dong that well in the sales market.
most will be buying the album / dvd.

wot happened to the 'i like you' single announcements to that live single, maybe its been stopped then........

  • Surely the question is not whether Moz will go on making albums, but whether he wants to go on making albums. He certainly shouldn't or won't do it just because we want him to. It seems obvious that Moz has found/made for himself a life in California that doesn't revolve around sitting in his room, reading feminist literature, and writing wonderfully dark/funny lyrics. He has hinted many times that he now has a sex life, for instance. And good luck to him. Quarry was a good album with some great songs but also with some third-rate lyrics: Not Sorry and Know How I Feel are two obvious examples. As his own best critic, Moz must be aware of this. As he said himself: will I too die?

  • was on the Kilburn 86 "Rank" show which was edited from the set when Rank was released, heaven knows why. If you have never had the pleasure of hearing this version, please find it because it's widely available on bootleg. Of course, I loved hearing this song on the last two tours like everyone else but it's not as good as when the Smiths played it. For a start Alain, Jesse and Little Barrie have ALL been playing the chords wrong. Even Marr said that himself, which is why it sounds so different. I also think it is played too slow most of the time.
