BRITISH MALE SOLO ARTIST - nominations
* Jamie Cullum
* Lemar
* Morrissey
* The Streets
* Will Young

More info at the nme website: Franz Ferdinand lead Brit Award nominations

And this is what the official Brit Awards website (link) says about our man:

Capturing the mood of an entire generation of angst-ridden boys, Steven Patrick Morrissey is truly a musical icon. Born in Manchester, Morrissey co-founded The Smiths with Johnny Marr in 1982. His lyrics and Marr's music ensured The Smiths were one of the era's most critically acclaimed bands. On going solo in 1988, Morrissey brought out an EMI album, Viva Hate which made UK No.1. A sting of successful singles followed, including Suedehead, The last OF The Famous International Playboys and Interesting Drug. Landmark albums Your Arsenal (1992) and Vauxhall And I (1994), cemented his reputation. However chart success did not always match Morrissey's 'favourite son' status, and a quiet spell ended in 2004 with a highly acclaimed Sanctuary Records album You Are The Quarry.

  • The Brits are all about politics, not music. The major record companies share the nominations, then decide who gets which prize to sell some more records of whatever act is hot. Poor Moz doesn't stand a chance, but he probably, and hopefully, won't even show up for it.
    Although it would be great seeing him do an acceptance speech.

  • Well what a list of the creme de la creme of British music!!!

    We've got our man Moz, who we all know won't win, despite being the most talented and consistent artist for over 20 years, who returned this year with the album of the year.

    Then we've got the rest of the shower of shit!!!

    Will Young the housewives choice, winner of Pop Idol!! Need I say more. Who will not have a record deal by the end of this year no doubt.

    The instantly forgettable Lemar, the poor mans Luther vandross, who came 3rd or 4th, in the terrible BBC version of Pop Idol, where one of the judges was Robin Bloody Gibb.

    The demented Jamie Cullum, who sings (badly) old Dean Martin songs while playing the piano, and doing a silly dance at the same time.

    And finally the probable winner, truly laughable bad boy The Streets , who longs to be a black American Gangsta rapper from the hood, whose masterpieces I've just looked up, include Fit But You Know It, and the obviously autobiographical classic song of Such A Twat!!

  • Of course he was going to be nominated and deserves to be. My heart says he will win, not least because of the dross also nominated., but also he seems to really returned to the nations consciousness in glorious fashion and no longer seems to wrankle those who don't love him. My head says Mr Skinner coz they must be desparate to give him something and he won't win the other categories he is in.

    Anyway, I am at a loss at why Moz is not in the live category. Did I dream last year, when he stole the festival scene, blew the roofs off venues all over the world and ended his UK stint with a sell out masterclass in performing live at Earls Court?

  • By the way, did you see which songs were nominated for best songs ever? Will Young 'Leave right now' and Robbie Williams 'Angels' - best songs ever?! Jeez but how stupid do they think we are?! Unfortunately the average, socalled musicfan today don't know shit about music - but they know lots about Usher, Maroon 5, Will Young, Robbie Williams and all the other MTV whores... "thicker than pigshit/nothing to convey/they're so scared to show intelligence/it might smear their lovely career... I am SO tired of all that crappy, meaningless MTV-music - it's everywhere... and now at the Brit Awards too...

    Oh yeah, and why give Bob Geldof a special award for a lifetime achievement to British Music?! What did he do? Oh I vaguely remember that he don't like Mondays - and thats about it... Then he arranged the Live Aid concert because he's 'such a concerned pop star' - no he's only concerned about his bank account and he's own wanna-be-Bono-image... crap!

  • BRITs25 : THE BEST SONG AWARD

    Joy Division - 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'
    Kate Bush - 'Wuthering Heights'
    Queen - 'We Are The Champions'
    Robbie Williams - 'Angels'
    Will Young - 'Leave Right Now'

    Possibly the most bizzare list i have ever seen. Can you imagine it? Joy division nominated for a Brit award?! I cant quite get my head round it. Absolutely fantastic that a song like that has been recognised but i dont know whether to laugh or cry.

    Morrissey is the obvious and only winner of his particular category, however, i do not expect him to win. Again, i dont know whether to laugh or cry. Nominated with Jamie Cullum Lemar and Will Young?

    Aghast. If he doesnt win it would only be sensible to give the award to Mike Skinner.

    Also, Franz Ferdinad will wipe the teen-soaked floor with everyone.

    The only other one in there with any sort of claim to make serious music is The Streets.

    And if anybody thinks that's Hip Hop, it's not.

    The only decent UK Hip Hop artist left is Roots Manuva. Run Come Save Me, what an album, A Grand Don't Come For Free, what a joke.

  • I would like to put forward that I don't see Morrissey as a solo artist anymore. His songwriting team of Alain Whyte, Boz Boorer has been the same since late 1991. In that time frame they have had numerous #1 entry singles in the UK charts, top 10 singles in the US charts, number one LP's in UK, top 20 in US, sold out the HOllywood Bowl, 5 nights at NY's Apollo Theatre, toured Australia and S. AMerica (which never ocurred with the Smiths) and the list goes on. Right up until the beginnning of the tour of Morrissey's current record the bandmembers Alain Whyte, Boz Boorer and Gary Day were the same as 14 years ago, (mind you the Smiths were only together for 5 years). Granted that in that time there have been drummers and bass players come and go, but the songwriting team is in effect the same and we all know how Morrissey feels about drummers and bass players anyway ("as replaceable as parts to a broken lawnmower" was how he referred to Mike and Andy during the legal proceedings he faced a few years ago). But in my eyes, Boz and Al are no hired gun guitarists, they are legitimate collaborators and songwriting partners that are on par with if not exceeding the team of Morrissey/Marr...I would love to hear your thoughts.
    Thanks,
    Tom
