  • eh.... videos are not Moz's strongpoints. Seems over half of them are simply him and the lads roaming around aimlessly. I prefer a live clip (ala "TFOTGTD" or "Pregnant for the Last Time") any day of the week.

It's interesting to speculate on his reasons for appropriating the garb of the priest, but there is no doubt about the impact that a Catholic upbringing makes on people, and worse again, an Irish Catholic background.
As a child in my parish, half of the priests ran off with women from the area, so they certainly knew what to do with THEIR desire.

"Did you see the microscopic smirks during the lines "Friday life has killed me" and "Jesus do you hate me" ?.

    "No?" I said

    "Genius", he said

I must admit I hadn't noticed these things till Horan pointed them out.

"And the look after he blesses himself at the end- ha ha ha", laughed Horan.

    "What's funny?" I said "He's dead serious!"

"Genius wrapped in a cryptic jigsaw puzzle!"

"Now that's taking it a bit far Father" I said

"You're sorely lacking a sense of humour or irony for that matter", said Horan.

"Christ, it's not like I'm American!", I said.

"Well you must be spending too much time on that Morrissey website then", he said.

"You're probably right there" I said.
    "I'll see you in Dublin"

"Indeed, it will be a special concert for Morrissey and the lucky leprechauns who have decided to go", he said

What a stunning video! And it's not anti-Jesus, it's anti-religion. The only relationship we can have with God/Goddess is a deeply personal one. Religion is about power, money, domination and social control. America claims to be a Christian country and yet this is a country that has massacred tens of thousands of men, women and children in Iraq, tortures prisoners, executes minors and people with learning difficulties, cuts taxes while it has some of the worst statistics on poverty and infant mortality in the world etc. etc. etc. To all that I'm sure Moz would want to add the fact that it has a system of food production that is based on extreme brutality and cruelty towards animals. As the cover of Meat is Murder suggests, it is all interconnected. What a seriously sick world we live in. Go for it, Mozzer!

AV Club has done Morrissey proud this time. The simplicity of "Irish Blood" came off as "will this do?", but here the starkness is fantastic. And did God schedule that sky specifically for Morrissey, or the other way 'round?

I've always loved the video for "Tomorrow", and "Jesus" is a altogether darker, brooding companion piece over 10 years on. Nice to see proper shots of all the band members, too, looking like a Waterfront mob you wouldn't mess with, lead by their Father. It's unfortunate that Alain isn't there, as it's one of the best songs he's ever written for Morrissey in my opinion.

It's scary how perfectly priestly Moz looks. When he shakes his finger up at the heavens during "Do you hate me?/Do you hate me?" there is fury and passion in his eyes and voice unseen and unheard of in popular music these days. And the gaze at the camera at the end -- pure Morrissey image for all time.

It is an unwatchably boring video, made by a child or a robot, containing no meaning whatsoever other than the suggestion that Morrissey knows that his fans will swallow anything.

And the title of the song is awkward. It just sounds awkward, and it implies a weird misunderstanding of Jesus, who didn't come to earth (allegedly or actually) to "forgive" anyone. So--if I have to spell it out for you--there's no irony in saying you've forgiven Jesus. He wasn't a priest, he didn't take confessions. (I'm reminded of the Guardian review that pointed out, with regard to IBEH, that the Windsors would never salute Cromwell.)

And who in hell ever took Morrissey for a Christian anyway?

I prefer the ending of The Life of Brian.

And the keyboards at the very beginning of the song sound as unutterably lame to me now as they ever did.

The album is shit. I honestly believe it may be a kind of practical joke on all of you who trashed Morrissey, when he was making ambitious guitar music, for not having a career more like Ricky Martin's. But now, you've enjoyed some crappy music, he's got your money, and he's off to the sanctuary of his mansion forever. So maybe he is clever, after all.
