Mark Simpson now has a US publisher for his book. A small deal, obviously, but very unusual for a book like this to be picked up in the US so long after the original publication. Here's the copy from Publisher's Lunch (daily trade email):

Mark Simpson's SAINT MORRISSEY, a memoir of the author's long-standing obsession with Morrissey of the 80s band, The Smiths, as well as a look at the cultural significance of the singer, recently published in the UK, to Amanda Patten at Touchstone, in a nice deal, by Doug Stewart at Sterling Lord Literistic, on behalf of SAF Publishing (NA).

  • I have read many comments on the board about how much they hate "Saint Morrissey"- my question is, "why?" I thought it was a great book- and I was *sure* other fans would like it too, since it's written from an actual fan's viewpoint. Oh well. I still think "Saint Morrissey" was a great read.

  • It was horrible! Simpson is playing social scientist as he crafts these ridiculous theories to explain Morrissey's behavior. He says he is a product of being reared by the 'Northern' woman. Don't even waste your money on this book.

  • It's not a bad book if you take it for what it is-a fan's thesis on Morrissey. It's not a straightforward bio so if you're expecting the amount of factual information contained in "The Songs That Saved Your Life" for example you'll probably be disappointed.

The book does contain some admittedly painful writing, but he also comes up with some interesting ideas. Not my favourite Moz book but I wouldn't dismiss it either.

  • I picked it up for a fiver from HMV, and while the Northern Woman and Beautiful Bastards stuff is bollocks, overall I've spent a fiver on far worse things.

    I enjoyed it.
