EMI Records have re-released Sandie Shaw's 1988 album Hello Angel on CD (EMI 7243 8 66255 2 6) in Europe.

The disc does not only feature the eleven original tracks from the Rough Trade Records release, recorded with the help of The Smiths and former Morrissey partners Stephen Street, Mark E. Nevin, Andrew Paresi, Clive Langer / Alan Winstanley and Kevin Amstrong (all working with Morrissey in 1989/1990 e.g. on Kill Uncle and November Spawned A Monster) but also features all B-Sides from Shaw's three singles during the Rough Trade era, including all tracks recorded with the Smiths, as bonus tracks.

All 17 tracks have been remastered and new liner notes - along with the original ones - tell all about the Shaw/Smith relationship. The tracklist runs as follows:

01 Nothing Less Than Brilliant (produced by Stephen Street) * 02 Hello Angel (produced by Stephen Street) * 03 Take Him (produced by Stephen Street) * 04 A Girl Called Johnny (produced by Clive Langer, Alan Winstanley and Peter Jones) * 05 Strange Bedfellows (co-written and produced by Kevin Armstrong) * 06 Please Help The Cause Against Loneliness (written by Morrissey / Street, produced by Stephen Street) * 07 Hand In Glove (written by Morrissey / Marr, produced by John Porter, remixed by Stephen Street) * 08 Cool About You (produced by Stephen Street) * 09 Flesh And Blood (co-written by Kevin Armstrong, produced by Stephen Street) * 10 Comrade In Arms (co-written by Clive Langer, produced by Stephen Street) * 11 I Will Remain (produced by Stephen Street)
Bonus Tracks: 12 Lover Of The Century (co-written and co-produced by Mark E. Nevin) * 13 Where Were You (produced by Stephen Street) * 14 I Love Peace (co-written and co-produced by Kevin Armstrong) * 15 Jeane * 16 I Don't Owe You Anything * 17 Hand In Glove (Original Single Version) (last three written by Morrissey / Marr, recorded with The Smiths in 1984)

In an interview with The Guardian today (Oct. 28), Sandie Shaw talks about Morrissey, amongst other things. The most interesting part is this:

What followed inspired Shaw's most famous fan, Morrissey, to write the lyric: "Did that swift eclipse torture you?"

I didn't realise 'Little Man' was inspired by Sandie Shaw...

  • Of all the favoured artistes that Morrissey has foisted upon us over the years Sandie Shaw remains my favourite...

I know that the Dolls invented punk and that Moz adored them above all others...

I know that Nico and Klaus Nomi are more tragic...

I know that T-Rex are "cooler"...

I know that it was Sparks he asked to perform at Meltdown...

I know Jobriath is more obscure...

I know that Linder is his "pal"...

I know that Cilla led directly to the break up of the Smiths!...

I know all that but still none of them make me feel quite as alive as Sandie does. Her voice is open and honest, she emotes and she had "it". She had style and grace. Her interpretation of Smiths numbers were inspired and inspiring. She won Eurovision with a song she hated yet she is still "cool".

In a world of wannabe Courtney Loves (stand up Brody Dalle) or fake miserablists (hello Avril Lavigne) girls the world over should be looking to Sandie for what it takes to be a woman in pop/rock...

  • Well, that's terrific news. Now ardent Smiths fans won't have to spend all day on eBay looking for the second 'There Is A Light' CD. As far as I know all three Smiths collaborations haven't been released on one volume, so this is just the job. The whole collection is positively Smithsy. That boxed set looks juicy too. Ciao.
Neither one particularly appeals to me...
  • I echo the above sentiments - but PLEASE can someone put together a Smiths box set. I have an idea for the dream box set, which I would happily shell out £70 for. It goes like this:

CD1 - Troy Tate version of the debut album
CD2 - FULL unreleased BBC Sessions, including the BBC Peel/Jensen/Janice Long versions of 'Wonderful Woman', 'Miserable Lie', 'Nowhere Fast', 'London' etc, plus round-up of stray b-sides('Jeane', 'Wonderful Woman', 'I Keep Mine Hidden') and possibly a couple of the unheard instrumental demos, if these are deemed worthy.
CD3 - Live concert, selected from their best recorded live performances
DVD - footage/documentary a la the 'London Calling' reissue, whatever.

Sadly, the court case has put paid to this, but what a box that would be. It's gotta happen someday.

  • I thought 'Little man..' was inspired by Jack Wilde, who starred as 'The Artful Dodger' in the film 'Oliver'?

The title would also suggest this.

    Who wrote the Guardian article?

David Brent? er, I mean David Bret.

  • I was trying to get this for a long time. Now I'm still looking for the Top of the pops video with Sandie singing Hand In Glove.

  • She once said that she loved him warts and all. Something I still relate to this day. This article has strengthen my view that Morrissey's philosophy of not meeting your idols is a good thing.

  • That is such bad journalism.

Little Man What Now is NOT about Sandie Shaw. I mean how does this -

Nervous juvenile, won't smile, what became of you?
Did that swift eclipse torture you?

... equate with sandie? As was recently posted on this site, though the Jack Wild rumour has persisted for years the song is ACTUALLY about the Please Sir! actor Malcolm McFee.

A pity this Peshek didn't check his other facts - Sandie released her version of Hand In Glove in 1984, not 83. The Marr tribute song is called Go Johnny Go, not Johnny Guitar. And Morrissey certainly did NOT 'twirl' behind Sandie when she performed wth The Smiths on TOTP - it was just Marr, Joyce and Rourke all barefoot.

It is SO frustrating that people like Bret and Peshek persist with these sloppy untruths. Maybe it just comes with the name David?

A wasted opportunity to actually ask sandie if she still has any contact with Morrissey...

  • Hello Angel (Score:2, Insightful)

Before everyone runs to the stores to buy this album, I just wanna ask: has anyone actually heard this album?

Well, I happen to own a copy and boy, does it suck!

"Please Help The Cause Against Loneliness" has some of the worst Morrissey lyrics ever! Musically, it will make you cringe.

Me thinks this release is just another attempt to squeeze some more money out of the already sucked dry Smiths fans.

  • This is an interesting write-up [f9.co.uk] (not mine) of those tracks which were on the original album.

Q: How many Zen buddhists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Three -- one to change it, one to not-change it and one to both change- and not-change it.
